Liverpool 4-0 Wolves: Verdict Thread

There's also 4 of them! 5 goals and two assists isn't it so far, between the four, nearly a third of the way through the season.
So you mean they've got half of Jota and Doc's cumulative involvements for the entirety of last season in less than a third of this one?

I'll be honest, I'm not sure I'm seeing the issue.

You suggested the 4 though..
Well, yes, because the minutes played by the two in Europe and the league last year will still be fewer than those played in the league by the four this year tbf. Needing 4 players to replace the attacking output of 2, isn't a great look.

I don't think our issue is replacing the output of Jota and Doc in the league personally. Raul is a much bigger issue, as although this represents a good opportunity for Fabio there is no way we can expect him to do what Raul did straight away. As Nuno said, we have to find solutions and occupy those spaces in a different way. Fortunately January isn't too far away - so we can assess in the meantime.

Raul was hardly firing on all cylinders before his injury. No one would expect Fabio to replace Raul at this best, but he's more of a potential focal point than anyone else we have in the squad, so I'd be hoping to integrate him as a starter this side of Xmas

5 goals, 4 assists so far for podence and Neto.

15 to beat, 9 achieved so far - comfortably in line to over achieve.

Neto has 3 goals, 2 assists so far - he may well beat both Jota and Doc of last year on his own...

People seem to think Semedo isn't great defensively but I see it differently. I see Semedo ending up 2 v 1 quite a bit and as Semedo gets forward more the space behind him gets exploited too.

Is this what other people see or is he just not great defensively?

I was surprised by people criticising him so much yesterday to be honest! Got himself in a muddle for the fourth goal but thought he was OK in general. First half I actually thought was one of the better players in our team.

Looks a bit of both to me atm

It would be very different if Fabio and Raul were like for like. From what I have seen they are very different and have different strengths and weaknesses. If Fabio scores five goals this season I will be amazed; happy but amazed. And that Raul injury brings in another question for me. Traores strength was beating a defender and crossing for Raul to score, it happened about 10 times last season. Yesterday his target was Lofty Podence at 5ft5 in heels. Again , Podence has a different game so why have Traore crossing? It seems a waste. Then if you dont need Traore to cross and beat people, he is no use as a central striker and he is not a wing back why do you keep him?

Given our situation if someone offers 40m plus for him now and we can get a central striker and A./N. Other midfield creator in then I would bite their hands off.

Re. Semedo, I think I just expected more given his reputation. He's clearly good technically, but he hasn't managed to turn that into being particularly influential at either end of the field, and his positioning defensively hasn't impressed me at all. I accept that he doesn't get loads of support, particularly when Adama is ahead of him, but I'd kind have expected that the whole point of spending £35m on a full back was because he'd be able to cope with that.

Was at fault for the 2nd too.

Think he's still finding his feet personally and did think he was improving prior to yesterday, his positioning is awful.

Like I say think he's finding his feet though and there's a decent player in there....the massive upgrade on Doherty many claimed though? No chance.

I'm a little dismayed that we moved away from the three behind Silva given how effective it was at unsettling Arsenal's defence. Having three different types of AM behind a focal link player meant they had to adjust differently every time we moved the ball to each one.

Last night Podence couldn't link play and Traore and Neto were stuck with trying to run past several players down each side of the pitch with Podence dropping deep often offering no link.

I think we should go back to 4-2-3-1 to see for sure if we really have something there.

I got roundly abused for posting this a few weeks ago, but I'll be astonished if Fabio scores more than two PL goals this season, even allowing for Raul's injury

I thought Semedo was mostly ok yesterday, but was being swamped as the midfield weren’t much cop at stopping the attacks coming through. There was some interplay in the second half involving Vitinha and someone else that I thought was part of the reason Nuno bought him, one touch pass and move that brought the ball from near our corner flag up to the half way line, was very slick.

realistically, one of our players gave away the first goal when it was even, and then we couldn’t cope with Liverpool’s fast breaks that carved us open, and their finishing was excellent is why we lost - the poor performance of our midfield in either creating chances for our front three to break of create, or to stop the waves of attacks onto our defence is my big concern.

just on cybers Traore point - he and Neto were our only creative points last night (5 key passes in total, all from those two), and the majority of the crosses went to donk who was our only good header of the ball - but Traore gives us more than just that, his link play was good last night and he won quite a bit in the air.

I thought Traore was one of the few that did ok yesterday - Marcal played well, Traore and Neves I thought played ok. I was disapointed in Pod, I don’t think he really got into the game one chip aside - but again, I feel the blame was really with the midfield.

I'd say the 2nd was completely on Boly chasing after Salah in Liverpools half - completely took him out of the game and left Coady facing up to 2 attackers

Have we though? The first team changes are probably Jota -> Neto/Pod and Doc -> Semedo. The first had already happened last season and the latter is hardly a weakening.
You're missing the point: Neto/Pod > Jota* and Semedo > Doc, but Wolves 20/21 < Wolves 19/20. It's a synergy thing.

*Edit: The Wolves version, anyway :)

Silva seems to have different strengths to Raul atm but similar in that he can provide a fulcrum for the other 3 plus any midfielder getting forward to play around. Seemed very obvious to me that against Arsenal we had more players in dangerous offensive positions than any other game this season, we also appeared to have a bit more control in midfield with that system, obviously its going to leave us more open at the back, which we need to work on.

Vitinha came on?

I'll be honest I fucked it off in a huff when the 3rd went in, hate scousers, hate tax avoiding corporations like Amazon so hated spending the whole match listening to Amazon employees wank off over there being 2000 scousers in the ground (literally how many times did they need to mention it) and the result wasn't helping either! Ha.

I didn't think Semedo was very good at all yesterday. Vs Arsenal I thought people were being harsh as they were overloading his side and he had little help but yesterday he got some of the basics horribly wrong and kept getting caught underneath it. Hopefully he will improve
