I'd say it's not really stubbornness - after all he hasn't been wedded to any one formation or combination of players all season, it's been a mess of constant changes with seemingly no direction at all. He does have a definite need to constantly try to prove how clever he is though by putting players in weird positions or by picking shapes which don't make any sense, all underpinned by Poyet style sterile possession. The rules on offside are fucking bollocks. They say he needs to be diirectly in the way blocking the keepers view. Well that's stupid, Rooney has blatantly affected the result of that play without touching the ball even if he wasn't blocking the keepers view.
