January 2022 Transfer Thread

Ollie Watkins was 33m when he moved to Villa

Obviously cannot type as fast as MarkakaJim

Still not 35m though. Close but no cigar 🤣🤣
I would take Watkins over Fabio every day and twice on a Sunday tbf

He really wouldn’t.

if you could get him a loan in the championship for someone who play decent football he’d be pretty useful I think. As mark said, he looked decent st times last season. His goals and assists per 90 were absolutely fine really.
You've seen enough championship football, what attributes does Silva possess that would work in that league?

He gets in more than enough good positions to score, as he displayed last season. Whenever he’s played age group football he’s looked too good for it and when he played against Forest he did perfectly well and was unlucky not to score (and set up a couple?)

It's back to the age old problem of finding a good enough back up to Raul and is happy to sit on the bench.

He looked good in the joke cup against other kids but that's not the cut and thrust of league football.

The last time I saw him for the U23's he looked atrocious. It may be our style of football that he's not suited to, which may be a wider problem.

I don't think he's any better than Lg1 and physically nowhere near Championship level.

I was at Forest and he was pretty anonymous in a game we had like 75% possession. Missed the header when Saiss scored the opener (again making zero contact with it under no pressure, he’s pretty much done this every time he’s had a header, this is not a good sign). Forest reserves then gave up and as a result he improved as Trincao and MGW were running rings round them.

I honestly have no idea how good he will be. I worry that he’s not good in the air for a big guy, isnt quick enough to run in behind and hasn’t shown good enough touch or strength to hold it up whilst accepting strength can be improved (although I don’t think he has a particularly big frame, he’s built more like Andy Keogh than Steven Fletcher for example).

He could have the best mental attributes in the world but it only gets you so far. Plenty of strikers have been lethal in the championship but can’t play at a higher level because they lack the bit extra. Billy Sharp and Lewis Grabban spring to mind. Both had good movement and finishing ability whilst being quick but not rapid. Now both aren’t remotely quick anymore but to my knowledge are still doing OK in the championship. Fabio Silva is much slower than them at their peak where they couldn’t cut it. Are his non physical attributes that much better than theirs that he can far out do what they did? Haven’t remotely seen that.

Fabio needs a run of games somewhere.

I don't think we'll really know where Fabio's ultimate level is until he's 22-23. Rafa Mir springs to mind here.

Unfortunately we've spent £35m in him, but that doesn't mean he suddenly becomes the finished article nor does it mean that he suddenly becomes a wonder kid. He needs a development pathway to give him the best chance.

The club fucked up by paying £35m for him, they shouldn't fuck up again by stopping his development. He has to be considered in the same bracket as Corbeanu, Marques, Lonwijk et al right now.

Unfortunately it does mean writing off most of that £35m. He's not a £35m player, that's obvious.

Fab saying Newcastle want Botman. Don’t think we will be back in for him (or any CB) this window. Can see where the club is at in the summer and make a proper decision

Andy, how much did we pay for Fabio ?

Reportedly Lille want 40m I'd say that's a big overpayment based on the bits I've seen. Pretty much par for the course whenever they are linked with a player now though.

Pft, we don't need a CB now, after we've got 9 points from the next 3 games were virtually safe so can afford to go 4 at the back for the rest of the season, certainly while Boly and Saiss are away.

Re: Fabio somewhere like the Eriedivisie might be more his level at the moment. You look at someone like Mount who spent time there, then the Championship, then was basically ready to go - it's a much more forgiving league to 'grow up' in

Chelsea do of course have an associate club there, which helps...not sure any of our linked clubs are even at that level at the mo

Let him go there and we'll sign from Newcastle via a relegation release clause!

I hope if we have a Plan B in place for January if we start seeing a lot of games postponed because of Covid as the knock on effect will be fixture congestion. If we end up in a situation where we are playing two games a week tiredness and the greater likelihood of injuries surely means we need at least an extra body in midfield and a little more depth elsewhere would be very welcome.
