January 2022 Transfer Thread

Who here has seen Botman playing ?

I doubt very many have , yet you'd swear he could play centre back all on his own with some of the comments here . He's so good apparently we wouldn't need two others or even one to play along side him - could mark two strikers by himself !
Tbf he's one of the most highly rated young centre backs in the world, and he wanted to come. It's not a massive reach that people want us to pay the extra £5m to try and improve one of our weakest areas

He's never played for the Netherlands and they are wank.

I've never seen the boy but I'm pretty sure he isn't what people think he is.

TBF to the Netherlands they have got decent centre backs! I'll agree with the rest of the side though.

I'm in the never seen him play category.

Botman as an individual is a red herring. It's that in a much needed position he was the player they prioritised and failed to get him despite, as far as we know, Lille making it clear what was required to do the deal. Meaning we didn't get anyone

I don’t really rate MGW at all, but if we don’t sign another midfielder in January we have to bring him back.
Try him here when required and make a decision in the summer. We’re getting away with it [just] at the moment but we can’t rely on Neves and Moutinho for a whole season
He's not a centre midfielder in the shape of Moutinho and Neves though, he plays in front of them like Podence does. So those two would still have to play behind him anyway.

Yes but that isn’t happening. I’m sure Mata and Matic probably on less money at United as they are squad players. Moutinho isn’t a squad player, he plays more than Neves FFS.
But i can't imagine that was seen as what was going to happen when his contract extension was agreed. It's only our bumbling recruitment that has meant that's ended up being the case.

On Botman, people were always going to get excited by his potential signing, regardless of whether they've seen him play or not; because of a mixture of the following:

- people are yearning to play a dynamic 4-4-2 formation similar to the one Lage had at Benfica.
- people don't like the existing centre backs, which elevates any potential new signing's status before a balls even been kicked
- he's highly rated
- we were told to "trust" Shi & the recruitment team, but by the time the Botman rumours started to surface, most of us were pretty panicky about the lack of business and would have taken pretty much anyone by that point
- it's a position we've needed to improve since being promoted

Being excited by a potential signing is just human nature - mix all the above in on top and it was always going to boil over. Thankfully Jeff fucked us all and didn't bother signing anyone (at least he had a go at getting Kieffer Moore over the line on deadline day, though...)

Part of me wishes we’d signed Moore just to see the outcry. Imagine him scoring a 95th minute winner. Scenes

Jesus Mary Joseph and the wee donkey! It must be international week again!

Its a really simple choice or at least it was in the window. Sign no-one or sign Botman. Which would I have preferred?

Sign Botman. His stats look fine and you have to take chance at times. He fits the sort of player fosun would want to sign and bring on. Either sign Botman or a CH who is demonstrably better than what we already have. Just dont sign no-one and say we tried. Cause you didnt try hard enough.

It's a choice but wouldn't describe it as simple, he could very well be an upgrade or he could be worse than Vallejo, that's the issue, no-one knows what he's like. Obviously you'd expect the people in charge of recruitment to be 'in the know' but they haven't been great recently.
I'd much rather we were in for someone with proven ability.

If they aren't ever coming on it doesn't make a difference whether it's Moulden, Ronan, me or you
With the greatest respect I'd definitely class a bench with Moulden & Ronan on as being a bit better than one with you and me on it. All things being equal.

Tbf Ronan could actually do a job coming on around 65-70 minutes to give us an extra body in midfield and a bit more control of possession. I’ve always liked him. Mad that he’s 2 years older than MGW, mind!
