January 2022 Transfer Thread

Also love the recent trend of saying clubs pay not to sign someone, no you pay a loan fee, you pay more to keep them permanently, it's not a penalty charge for terminating a deal.
Except we absolutely did pay Porto not to sign him. We paid a penalty not to sign Willian Jose as well.

Far too simplistic to say more time on the pitch = better player.

Perhaps the environment, the style of play, the balance with different team mates or many other things just suits him better at Porto and that's why he's getting more minutes?

He looked a tidy footballer in his limited appearances last season but it was never anything more than that. Think for the quoted price I would've wanted to see a bit more impetus. Few tidy give and goes, the odd sidestep away from pressure and that, it was nice to see but it was always in safe areas that didn't really achieve anything. If he'd been doing that closer to the opponents box fairly regularly, leading to situations like Moutinho's goal the other week, then I'd have been more convinced.
I’ll take the fact that most club send young players out on loan to get experience playing at a higher level as evidence that it can be a significant factor. For every Foden who doesn’t there are ten like Beckham, Kane and Mount that do. If you really think Vitinha hasn’t benefited from regular first team football it’s best we just agree to disagree.

I'll be honest, Pote never stood out to me when I saw him play for the u23s. He was tidy and technically good but I never thought for a second he'd progress to what he is now. Then again I only saw him playing in central midfield.

Wasn't the talk that he was homesick anyway, which is why he was allowed to leave for nowt?

It was pretty widely reported that Pote didn't want to be here, yeah.

We missed out on a hell of a player, for sure, but I don't necessarily know how much I can criticise the club for that.

I'm not saying it plays no part, I'm saying it's not as simple as playing more minutes and definitely being better.

Vitinha playing minutes now at Porto and looking good doesn't mean that he'd look the same player now at Wolves if only he'd been given the same time on the pitch. There are more factors at play.

No shit Sherlock. With a player who clearly has a lot of ability it is almost certainly a significant factor so I’m not really sure what point you are trying to make unless it’s just being contrary for the sake of it.

When you look at some of the shite we've been hoarding/offering new contracts to in the youth setup, when you have a genuine talent - and it's obvious to most (maybe not exactly *how* much of a talent, but as Johnny said, he could see it from limited viewings with Goncalves), and you then let them go, same with Vitinha, it's difficult not to be critical. The club are employing and paying a lot of money to people who's job is to spot talent. When it's under their nose and they let them go so a club elsewhere can benefit, it leaves a sour taste.

Vitinha I can *sort* of understand, because we were obviously juggling funds around during the pandemic, but he's not the only example.

Wasn't it you that got outed as being a meek little mouse by someone who knew you irl? Awfully agro on here, especially for someone who apparently doesn't even support this club. Wonder what's got you so wound up, too timid to vent your frustrations in real life?

I saw Gonçalves a couple of times and either he had a bad game or Im a shit judge of footballer. He didn't do anything that made me think he should be getting a chance in the first team.

i think as Wolves fans this is a relatively new phenomenon, we are used to ex players being shit, to see some youth players going on to have good careers is a bit of an oddity!

Not sure why you've felt the need to go so aggressive with the response but I'll have one more attempt at adult conversation before giving up.

Everyone seems to be making out like Vitinha was a no brainer signing, generally with the power of hindsight and this seasons form. I'm merely trying to offer the view that there are lot of variables in a players performance and development that mean it's far from being so clear cut.

Is Vitinha a better player now because he's getting more minutes or is he playing more minutes because he's become a better player over the summer? Is he in fact no better than he was last season but getting more minutes because the competition for places isn't as strong or he's simply a better fit for what that team needs? Maybe they've done better analysis of his game to identify areas for improvement, maybe they've got coaches who've found a better way to translate things to him and opened his mind to faults in his game?

There are too many variables to be definite, Wolves could have signed him back last month and there's no guarantee you'd get the same performance from his as Porto have so far this season.

Just seems like people want something to whinge against the club, Shi or whoever else again for a bit and he's flavour of the month.

Maybe you need to read back, someone commented on my persona from at least 8 years ago given their point of reference. Have you not changed at all in 8 years?

As for being wound up, perhaps you need a mirror.

Ignoring the last paragraph/dig, everything else you say is completely fair, tbh.

I'm of the opinion that, for £15m, he showed enough to warrant a contract. Especially as we were heading in to a PL season with 3 x senior CM's. Worse case scenario for me is we'd have flipped him for a profit in a year or two, even if he didn't develop in to a first choice option for us this year.

Was it spending hours arguing on the internet about a club you claim not to care about that helped you come out of your shell?

Why is my relationship with Wolves relevant to the conversation? Or my internet browsing habits?

Have questions over my character being answered and now you're merely looking for another topic to pick a fight over?

It's always relevant. It's fucking weird.

I'm not convinced it is relevant. I doubt it's influenced the development of Vitinha, or any player for that matter, either positively or negatively.

Any other insults you want to get out of your system while you're here? Wouldn't want you to go home feeling like you hadn't got value.

My reply wasnt meant to be aggressive, just drawing attention to you saying factors other than playing time have an impact which is rather obvious. I completely understand why we didn’t sign him and see exactly the same issues with Trincao - he needs to play to develop and he could well be on the bench a lot, though he plays a position where subs get plenty of time. When we play two in CM substitute opportunities are less as Moutinho and Neves have been superb so Vitinha would have got nowhere near the time he has at Porto.
