January 2022 Transfer Thread

A week ago we were discussing swapping Adama for Doherty, so FWIW, at least this is progress. Also, £25m isn't a big sum of money in today's world of transfers. It'll bearly register interest in most quarters.

I don’t know where this “£12-£25m isnt that much money” has come from, it absolutely is.

Particularly for a team who in recent history isn’t spending any money.
I find this notion bizarre too. It's as though people are divorced from reality and only exist in some odd dream where if we don't spend stupid cash we don't succeed.

I'd like us to go back to the Jota/ Neves model and I hope with RAN, Mosquera and Chiquino we are getting back to it.

I don't think anybody is, but assuming the rumours are true we are paying finished product money for potential. The player from those 20 games isn't worth half of the amount supposedly involved based on those performances
That's perfectly put.

It's not like buying potential like the Vitinha deal, who'd have been on about £30k a week.

If someone is our top earner, that needs to be reflected in their impact on the pitch *now*

For anyone who cares. Outside the superpowers, £25m is a lot of money. Comparing Trincao to Odegaard, similar fee but Odegaard already far more productive. Buendia is a massive overpayment (classic Villa, but they got £100m for Grealish so it’s to be expected) but at least he had pedigree and is performing for them.

Daka has had limited opportunities yet still has 9 goals.

25m is what we wouldnt budge from for Sanches wasnt it? So yeah , its a lot of money. But then so is 35m, but thats been done to death ;)

for me in the current market you pay a maximum of 15m for potential if youre not a big six side. Proven players over 30 can also command a fee of 15m or a little more. 25-28 proven players are 25m plus unless youre a big six side and can go shopping for megastars. We cant , we are not and we should not with our structure. Newcastle showing that having money and being able to get the right calibre is a difficult balance. We were VERY fortunate to have the Medes link to get Neves, Moutinho , Jimenez , Jota and Traore when we did. We got a good deal with Neto too and Podence seems abouit right. Trincao at 25m seems high at the moment, Semedo at 30+ also seems high and Fabio at 35 seems extortionate. I prefer the buy potential a bit cheaper but have an experinced spine. The next moutinho is due and we could get a 30 something for around 5-10m that would do that job when Moutinho finishes. I dont have a problem with that model at all. I have a problem with identifying areas for improvement and themn not actively recruiting to fill them. This window is still looking Meh atm

I've got a horrible sinking feeling that we're done, as far as major incomings go in this window.

Traore will go. Trincao will be made permanent in the summer. Hwang we know is being made permanent in the summer. We've bought in Chiquinho who will be back up to the returning Neto. Neto/Podence/Trincao & Hwang will compete for the wide areas with Chiquinho as back up. Raul will be our main centre forward with back up from Fabio/Hwang. The rest of the team picks itself, and we'll probably have to make do with Donk, Jordao & Cundle as back ups for Neves & Moutinho.

Need to keep everything crossed that Bruno can keep working his magic over the second half of the season.

Obviously we need to wait until the window is shut before jumping to conclusions, but lets just say - for example - we signed someone like Renato Sanches. It would give us such a boost in quality and in an area we need additional QUALITY (not numbers), to help us kick on over the remainder of the season. I just don't think Jeff/Fosun will do it and for me, *if* that happens, it will be a massive missed opportunity.

That was pretty much confirmed weeks ago really. Expecting nothing else and have to hope for the following to ensure the season is a good one rather than drifting into the same level as last season.

1) Neto comes back flying
2) Chiq hits the ground running and carries his form in Portugal over
3) We don't lose Neves for a long period through injury
4) Raul stays fit
5) Hwang gets back on the goal trail or Podence starts scoring in the League

What, Jinky having a sinking feeling? If he were a ship, he’d be the Titanic.
Cheers for that, Jabba. But actually, I've been extremely positive about areas of the club where many others were not. Jose Sa & Bruno being the two topics of conversation that jump to mind.

It also appears that I've been holding out hope on a big centre mid signing a lot longer than others, judging on the comments above. So I think you may well be wide of the mark with your snide remark.

Indeed.

Good to have you back posting again, Stu.

Its an odd feeling, we are 8th in the league and generally outperforming expectations, but theres a general feeling of disappointment that just isn't going away.

I gave up expecting a big signing a few weeks ago, it doesn't stop me hoping though....

Agree with all that, and I’d add ‘or Moutinho’ to the third bullet. If Trincao stepped up and gained some confidence in front of goal there would be more leeway for Chiq or Neto too. That’s conceivable (edit: if not likely)

It was playful, mate.

You know what keeps me coming back here? The undying optimism.
