January 2020 transfer window

You see this is the bit I find nonsensical. We must've known Cutrone was unhappy at the club and that he was looking to go back to Italy. So you plan accordingly to get a player in, like Dortmund have with Harland or Liverpool with Minamino. It would instantly alleviate the pressure on the squad and also give us a better negotiating position with Fiorentina.

It isn't like the Transfer window opens and we then start looking, this will have down (I hope) months in advance along with knowing what is happening with players, agents and their personal circumstances. Now maybe a couple of players have said no but then you have to get the ones in that say yes and the ground work for that should've been done in December at the latest, not January the 1st.

Zero chance on the 1st Jan the board went "right, best look for a player or 2 now".

We have no clue who we have spoken with, who has said no, who has said maybe. The Cutrone transfer doesn't actually change much for us does it. We weren't using him so him not being on the bench changes nothing in the situation, apart from removing an unhappy individual out of the squad.

Personally I think where we are right now is a truly difficult place to sign players. Now we could go out and sign a striker tomorrow. For example, go to Peterborough and offer them £6m for their top scorer and we would have a new player (please note I am NOT suggesting we sign Toney btw). Lets use the forward role as an example as we clearly need a player in that position - The type we want has to be as close to the level as Raul as possible but they have to accept that when they first come in they are going to be 2nd choice. Now that is piss easy if you are Man City, Liverpool, Dortmund etc as you are giving them a chance to win medals. Right now we cannot do that, ours is selling a vision and pushing on from where we are now to get into the position of a Man City, Liverpool. That is stupidly hard and probably harder to do than get Neves, Boly and Jota to play in the Championship. We are still basically a nothing team to players over in mainland Europe Also, are clubs willing to shift on players of that quality in January? We need some strong work from not only Wolves but Jorge and Co.

I did think we had a player lined up, just from the way Nuno had been talking but I will be staggered if we wake up on the day after Deadline Day and we have the same players as we have now.

Because it's only January 10th and neither you nor I know that this hasn't happened yet, or what stages any potential transfer is at. If there are any at all, of course.

I've simply never understood the point of worrying about something we can never know the full details of before we reach the point where we need to worry about it.

Far more useful to worry about how the fuck I'm going to get served in an acceptable amount of time in the pub before the game tomorrow.

I think there is some serious point missing going on reading this.

We are not pant wetting. We are concerned. The reason being that the last two windows have been oversold and underdelivered. We have heard a lot of talk/ rumour/ conjecture( albeit not from the club) about targets identified etc this window, last window and the ones before. At the end we were left all thinking that the window in the summer that promised much , delivered little. Then we hear that targets changed their mind at the last minute blah blah. Given that experience, the wafer thin squad , the lack of striking options the fact we have sold Cav Costa and Cutrone in 12 months and basically not repaced them seems , well a little bit silly. Add to that the the " wolves will only sign players who improve their first team squad and are better than what they already have " that has been rumoured and you can understand a certain nervousness as we have been down that road. This is a different era but it is also clearly frustrating Nuno at a time when we dont want him unsettled thank you very much.

Of course the Cutrone situation affects us immediately. We have no cover if Raul gets injured in what is going to be a very busy spell That's not very good planning if you know your only cover is off and there are no youth team stars coming through.

I'm sure there are a few ageing players after one last payday on a short term loan/ transfer for a season or youth team stars we could get in and I agree with you prising a first team striker of premier league level out of any club is difficult. I don't think anybody has suggested otherwise have they?

I think that's the point isn't it? We don't look prepared and to have such a threadbare squad and your manager saying we need players just looks a bit amateurish.

If you are not using a player then it changes nothing. Oh no, Cutrone isn't around to ignore anymore what are we going to do. We needed a striker even if Cutrone stayed so nothing has changed

Nuno said:
“It’s a reality, we need to bring players and we will bring players. It needs time, needs proper decisions for us to bring players that can really help us and bring different characteristics to our squad.”

Nuno seems fairly relaxed by it all.

How do you know this? You don't.

How do I know the contrary? I don't.

Point of argument? About as much as listening to my parents squabble over Meghan/Harry v The Queen

I didn't think we did need a striker with Cutrone here, I thought he looked pretty good in the games I'd seen him have but for whatever reason he hasn't settled and it hasn't worked out for him.

You can't seriously think Raul is going to play every game between now and the end of the season?

I doubt Cutrone walked in last week and told Nuno he was unhappy and he's off to Florence.

No but with Cutrone here he would play any important games (so most of them) regardless of gaps between them. I like Cutrone but Nuno wasn't happy with something as he had plenty of chances to use him in December and only trusted him in a game v Besiktas Reserves and a few mins here and there.

It's still left us worse off though as even though he wasn't being used very often who would you rather have to bring on if needed for 10-15 minutes, or if Raul got injured? Cutrone or BAS?

Cutrone obviously wasn't settled and hasn't worked out as we'd hoped and I can accept him moving on, it's probably best for all parties. His departure isn't insignificant to Wolves though, despite his recent lack of minutes on the pitch.

Raul didn't play all the games when we did have Cutrone, so as you say he shouldn't be expected to now. We have 5 games between now and the window shutting where we have BAS and Samuels as back up to Raul, this is exactly why some fans are questioning the strategy, we have unnecessarily left ourself bare and unnecessarily left ourselves open to chance that Raul doesn't get a knock.

It's not the just the risk injury with Raul, it's the lack of tactical flexibility we have with each game that we don't have a suitable option with the required quality.

I'm disappointed that the club haven't had the foresight to mitigate the risk - even on the 10th of January.

Also if Raul does get a bad injury we will find ourselves having to pay another 10% at least in transfer fees.
