January 2017 Transfer Thread

Plot twist, Johnny is secretly Kevin Thelwell

I get that, my point is more on the lines of WHY the change of mind. I see two possibilities.

a) Costa's performances were so impressive that they alone made Fosun re-think releasing the cash to make the deal happen and it is purely a one-off before a reversion to previous strategy, and Thelwell is fine.

b) Influence from Lambert and possibly from within Fosun itself has meant that Fosun wish to change the policy. If that is the case then Thelwell and his policy is getting sidelined.

I think you're reading a little too much into it Paddy. His value just shot up way above the release clause so we pulled the trigger while we had first refusal. I don't think it's any more complicated than that.

I don't think it thinks Thelwell is really being sidelined at all, personally.

As far as we're aware he was the man behind bringing in Lambert and he's added to that by bringing in two former Lambert players in Weimann and Marshall, so it seems they're on the same page there. Costa is a bit of an anomaly, he's the only Mendes boy from the summer still knocking around so I think that shows to some extent how the balance has shifted back towards Thelwell, but I wouldn't have thought for a minute Thelwell would be against making that move permanent, just perhaps didn't think it was possible when previously asked.

And he'd have gotten away with it if it hadn't been for those meddling kids,in a scooby doo style

Someone told Fosun if they spend £13m now they could make a healthy profit in the Summer. Whether that was one, some or all of Thelwell, Dalrymple, Mendes or Lambert is a moot point really. They are an investment business, it's a good investment.

Fosun are an investment company, and it's quite obvious that Helder Costa represents a sound investment. His form and reputation has grown massively since he played his first game with us (and arguably even more so since the added exposure of the two FA Cup games against Premier League opposition), so his value has also increased.

Thelwell made his comments before the FA Cup ties and was probably telling the truth at that point. OR, he could have been talking our chances down to keep a cap on people's expectations in case we couldn't get it over the line.

I don't think now, because we've signed Costa, it suddenly means Thelwell has been shut in a dark office with no consultation from anyone else at the club about the deals we are making.

It probably just means Fosun have decided to make the (sizable) investment, knowing it's a win/win situation.

You posted this as I was typing mine out by the looks of it. Essentially a condensed version of what I have written, and bang on the money.

I think he was just playing down our chances of getting him. Fosun obviously decided to splash the cash on him more recently than that.

Conspiracy theory.

Club have already decided what the early bird promotion is going to be.
They release a statement that dampens down any expectation of Costa signing permanently.
Costa signs permanently.
Club release details of the Early Bird offer.
First day sales 300% higher than last year.

I would think the Liverpool game had more to do with Early Bird sales but the Costa signing has helped a lot.

Agree with this. And the club playing down a signing isn't unprecedented.

I think it speaks volumes for the job Paul Lambert has done that there's very little hysteria regarding this window. I've been amazed in the difference in our supposed deadwood such as Saville, Coady et al. The need to strengthen immediately was nowhere near as urgent as I originally thought and indeed I'm happy to see how they get on for the remainder of this season and readdress in the summer.

Marshall was just as much a Thelwell signing. Indeed he had bid for him last summer, nearly £3.5m from what I was told. He and Lambert are working together as it should be and how it was under Jackett. They will come to an agreement on who to target with the Head Coach getting the final say, be it yes or no.

I suspect Lambo has more say (or at least, will insist a lot more fervently on what he does and doesn't want) than Ken did, there won't be any Nathan Byrnes coming in while he's manager. Which is fine, I don't want players here who the manager won't use because he never wanted them.

He also said that he chooses his own players and if that becomes an issue he'll walk.

Definitely a tougher, more headstrong character than KJ which is fine by me. I prefer him to be more manager than head coach

Then we don't need a chief scout as well as Kevin Thelwell. Seems a bit bizarre to have both and especially if neither man isn't really up to the task at hand.

The biggest difference is that literally no one bought one last season as we didn't have an owner, were playing the worse football I'd ever seen and showed signs things were only going to get worse.

Agreed. Plus there is no denying that the offer is bloody excellent and a huge incentive to buy tickets. If there was any way financially that I could I would be all over it for a ticket for me and one for mini and micro to share.

I had also heard that Costa is well settled locally. Apparently he's also very much a "family man", and his family are happy, and that's his priority.
I think Thelwell was managing fan expectations, as well as other clubs - making sure they don't add a series of 000's onto transfers.

Spoke to a few people today who had given up their season tickets but will be back next season. Renewed hope and expectation together with a very good offer.
