If Not Lage, Then Who?

Really don’t care about the Who right now - would be refreshing just to let the handbrake off and let this very talented group just play more instinctively.

You really think he's stopping them from doing things? Granted his giving them essentially nothing beyond a basic formation to use but to believe that he's actually preventing them from doing things seems bonkers to me.

Like Jimenez is stood there on his heels at the back post, the way he has done for his whole Wolves career pretty much, thinking 'fuck me I really want to attack that near post, cunto Bruno will slaughter me if I do though'. His failure to display any sort of desire to attack the ball or threatening spaces isn't on his manager, that's fucking basic level stuff that he should be doing automatically.

These players seem to have barely any instinct to do anything, certainly not in an attacking sense at least. Bruno's lack of direction is essentially giving them free rein to do their thing and this is it, nothing. Coaches, players, they're all just doing nothing and it's a joke, how have people who've been in the game so long got so little idea what to do?

Yes to the first question - couldn’t be arsed with the rest.

Ange Postecoglu
Rúben Amorim
Sérgio Conceição
Julen Lopetegui

In that order.

That's my realistic shortlist.

Almost certainly going to be Lopetegui isn’t it.
The stars are aligning. I’m neither miserable or over enthusiastic about the prospect. We’d be at least getting someone who is a serious manager and should be able to get the basics right. I’m also pretty relaxed about his defensive mindset. Nuno had one too and yet for the majority of his time at Wolves I loved watching that team and was excited to be at the ground. A good number of question marks about him of course, but enough to like and he’d be a serious appointment at least.

My ideal candidate would be Potter but I very much doubt we would be able to tempt him to come here.

Of the managers currently unemployed, Marco Rose is the stand out candidate. I can't see Fosun appointing him, however. It would be far to sensible for them.

My knowledge of Portuguese managers is limited but If we were to go down that route again (which I guess makes sense due to the amount of Portuguese players we have) then Ruben Amorim & Sergio Conceceicao are the obvious candidates. Andre Villas-Boas is available for free though so he would be a more likely choice I guess.

I am just relieved that Gatusso has a new job as we would 100% have been lumped with him by Mendes.

Bruno doesn’t have a problem defensively, in fact his record is good in terms of goals conceded.

Lopetegui and his dull as fuck football does not solve our goalscoring issue.

We need complete change not more of the same.

Have to agree, we need someone to try and unlock the attacking instinct in some of these players. They might not have much more in them but 3-4% makes some difference. I do have a feeling whoever is manager will need Sasa to stay fit though as we’re basically playing without a striker when we have the ball at the moment for long periods of the game.

Irrelevant of who the manager is, a team will go and implement the plan/tactics the manager sets out. Unless they are having a private meeting and saying ‘let’s ignore everything the gaffer says and so what we want’

It just looks like our ‘plan’ is absolute garbage.

This. We don’t have poor attacking players. Take a few of our starting 11 last night

Semedo was known as a good attacking full back who was weak defensively

Guedes scored 10+ la liga goals last year

Nunes is hyped as an outstanding box to box mid

We wouldn’t accept 35+ for neto so he must have some attacking ability or we’re just all silly

Ok Raul is struggling il give that.

The players we have should not be scoring 2 goals from that opening 5 games

Other than the massive compensation, I don't think Potter is unobtainable. If he looks at our squad vs the one he's working with at the moment, he'd surely rather have the talent we have at our disposal. He's not going to get an elite job until he takes a stepping stone job like us/Everton/Villa - a bigger club with Brighton, dealing with better players and bigger egos, to demonstrate he can handle the pressure of expectations higher than those at Brighton.

There is no plan beyond formation, why are the players incapable of independent thought beyond that? Because they're playing like they have no idea beyond what they're told to do, which appears to be nothing at the moment.

If you're given a task at work does it need to be explained to the most minute detail or do you manage to fill in a few blanks by falling back on your previous experience and understanding of your job role? If you got to a position where you didn't know what was expected would you just sit and do nothing at all I'm absence of guidance or would you attempt to figure it out yourself or asking for further instruction?

I think Roberto De Zerbi is without a club. I have a limited memory, but weren't his Sassuolo team good to watch?

Back in '74, I was in Old Trafford (I worked football specials from Manchester to United's station and got in for free) and Tommy Doherty was the manager and when Utd got the ball, all 10 players charged up the field passing the ball to each other. The Defences never knew what hit them! Then when it broke down they'd all run back to their own end, then when they got the ball they all fucked off up the other end on the attack.
It was hilarious to watch, this red wave running up and down the pitch in unison.
But then of course he came to us and presided over a 21 game winless run....
So I suppose it's not that sort of 'completely different' you're thinking about?

There will be a plan. I mean, as limited as his CV is, Lage won’t be where he is if he is a coach with ‘no plan’

You’re basically implying Lage picks the team and just goes ‘meh let’s see what happens’ he will have a plan. It’s just a shit plan that clearly isn’t working.

No matter what peoples opinions of him are, he 100% won’t be going ‘there’s the team, just have fun, play with a smile it’s all about enjoying yourself’ he may be imitating a poor Pub league manager at times, but let’s not stretch the envelope to something it’s not
