Everton (H) Build up

Yeah, might mean more opportunities for MGW too as I think you have alluded to before.

I'm not so worried about Joao, don't think he has dropped off as much as people think just too much work to do to create and opposition know if they stop him they stop a lot of our build up play. We just need to find solutions for that. His set pieces last couple of games haven't been great though!

Yeah it should mean more opportunities for MGW.

Joao has dropped off and maybe it's not been a massive drop but even a tiny drop in standards is make a big impact in this league especially when you are used to the quality of Moutinho. His set pieces again haven't been great for a while.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Donk play more than a ten yard pass. At centre back, he very rarely played anything other than a safe pass - he wasn’t much better with the ball than Bennett.

The difference with Boly or Saiss in terms of forward passes is huge.

He tried over ambitious passes repeatedly which often resulted in chances for the opposition! Was really disappointed in Saiss and Boly’s passing the last two games. Aimless hoods down the middle.

There’s actually some interesting stats that showed how good and progressive Dendoncker’s passing from centre back was compared to in midfield where he is a lot safer. His passing was a huge upgrade on Bennett in the department IMO

Yeah, not big booming crossfielders but tried to pass through the lines a lot (as Punts says, taking a big risk a bit too often).

Benno bless him never had that in his locker.

His passing at rch was good, his occasional switching off less so

Good article that.

What makes the use of the term ‘tight-end’ for Dendoncker’s role apt is that, at 6’2” (188cm), the midfielder is a big unit, and five of his 12 shots inside the box have been headers. But although he spends an unusual amount of time up the pitch, he may not add much other than his presence.

Dendoncker’s passing is not incisive. His passing sonar (specifically as a central midfielder, weeding out the time he’s played at centre-back this season) shows a very small share of forward passes.

Each segment represents an angle with the player at the centre, and their size indicates the proportion of the player’s passes in that direction. The large downwards segment shows Dendoncker makes a fair chunk of his passes directly backwards.

That's someone trying to be too clever, trying to equate the tight end position in the NFL to football. There are different types of tight end, some are principally just an extension to the OL, others are essentially auxiliary slot WR's, it's all a bit forced. Donck is a different type of midfielder to Moutinho we all get that the NFL reference is cobblers

Yeah but in general terms a TE is a tall defensive player who also plays wide receiver. So you can understand the comparison with a defensive player who runs into advanced positions and gets on the end of long balls.

Traore is very much a running back too!

We can probably make more of that when we play 3-5-2. We did a bit last season but seem to have stopped now - when Rui bangs it out to the right (which he does 95%+ of the time, partly through instruction, partly because that's the best his spanner of a left foot can do), double up over there with both Donck and Doc. We should win the lot unless Rui wangs it straight out of play.

Donck struggles playing up the field because he’s receiving the ball often with his back to goal. It is not his game to receive it on the half turn. He need to receive the ball With the game in front of him, much like Coady does. And that’s why Coady struggled in CM too.

It’s not really Neves game either so this is why we need a more advanced players who is going to receive it on the half turn and drive forward, create, commit players and work shooting opportunities.

It’s that or a massive system change, which Nuno won’t do.

Not that I expect such a lineup, however:

Patricio
Boly - Coady - Saiss
Doherty - Dendoncker - Neves - Jonny
Neto - Jiminez - Jota

I'd like to give Doc and Raul a rest, but we just don't have backups for them. Neto starting obviously pending his fitness. Maybe Podence? Hard to know if/when Nuno will think Portuguese Dan is ready.

To rest Doc Jonny could go to the right and Vinny at LWB, but he got murdered at Goodison, so probably best not to, plus whilst Doc has been poor going forward since West Ham, he has been pretty decent defensively, particularly in the air.

Thought he got a chasing last night tbh and back to his old tricks of not stopping crosses.

I wouldn't necessarily make that change right now though.

There has to come a point where we rotate to keep the players fit and fresh - or at least make a few subs occasionally with more than a few minutes to go

I've been clear on my thoughts about playing Jonny on the right for well over a year now tbf.

“We have some issues – one of them is Adama [Traore]. We still have the training session of Saturday to reassess all the situations. Some knocks, normal things that happen in football, so let’s wait to see how things are.

“He’s better [Pedro Neto]. He trained yesterday with the fitness coach and was able to do some things. We still have one day to assess.”
