Everton 0-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

Finally got through the full game. I don’t think the first half was anywhere near as bad as some said, but could be because I was watching it knowing the result already.

It felt like Everton came out the blocks at 100mph because they knew the crowd would turn if we got on top & they’d just been humped by Spurs so needed a reaction. I think Bruno knew this too, hence the conservative line up & tactics (and in fairness I said “shite lineup” beforehand, so for that I apologise). For the main, the gameplan worked, but Richarlison got in behind (mainly down Kilman’s side, who I thought was a tad shaky again) but Sa was dependable as always and bailed us out. He really is an excellent goalkeeper. I also noticed that we played it back to him a few times on the floor and the home fans were giving it the big “wheeeeeey” waiting for him to fuck up, but were left disappointed when he controlled it and passed it out like a cultured midfielder. Top, top keeper.

The goal in the second half couldn’t have come at a better time. Sucked the life out of them and the crowd turned at that point - allowing us to manage the game with relative ease. Neves the pick of the bunch in the second half. Jimenez worked tirelessly but looked a bit ‘bambi on ice’ at times. Jonny was excellent again. Podence - we’d absolutely HATE him if he was playing against us. The stuff with Pickford in the first half was pathetic.

Marcal watch: nowhere near as bad as some make out on here, but quite clearly never going to offer as much going forward as RAN, and it’s that side of the game that fans appreciate the most. I don’t think we renew his contract either way.

Oh, and I didn’t mind Frank Lampard as a player but as a manager he can get in the bin. Hope he takes them down.

Not sure if it’s been posted - but the video of the players going off and Coady picking up that kid is great to see.

With where the club is now etc and if we stay where we are over the next few years, would Coady go down as a wolves legend?
If he captained us to a cup win, in my opinion then definitely. If we stay around what we've been doing but don't win anything, he'll always be highly thought of, but not quite a legend, for me.

"Can only think RAN and Boly are short of fitness between 2 short game times. 3 in midfield to start probably wise as Everton will try to dominate first 30 mins. Hope he changes it as the game progresses."
I said this when the team was announced on the matchday thread.

So Bully, who never played for us in the PL, isn’t a legend? Or does winning the Sherpa Van Trophy count?

Totally different context, of course he's a legend. It's all subjective isn't it. If Neves were to stay with us another 4-5 years, I'd class him as a legend, whether we win anything or not.

Still don’t see why Wolves have to win something for Coady to become a legend. He’s well on the way in my eyes as he’s been the best leader we’ve had since Mike Bailey. Having a player at the club that is probably the most popular player in the whole of the Premier League because of the way he conducts himself makes me proud to be a Wolves fan. In Coady’s case his influence on the team and club extends well beyond playing ability probably more than any player I’ve ever seen at Molineux.

He is a Legend.

It's just my opinion, we obviously have different criteria on what constitutes a legend.

For me you'd have to be considering erecting statues or renaming stands to be considered a legend, which I don't think we'll be doing with Coady to be fair. Maybe he if captains us to a cup win, but even then it'd be debatable.

Name a better and more influential captain for us this centrury. I am struggling. He is an England international and bar one cap that's the only one since Bully, he is the on field leader, and he is a genuine human being. He conducts himself on and off the pitch in a way most professional footballers can only aspire too. He is the first name on the team sheet and the probably reason we play with a back three as it accommodates him and covers his lack of pace. I dont know what more he has to do to get Legend status.

Conor Coady is undoubtedly a Wolves legend IMO. The most likeable, charismatic club captain I can remember having, and one of the best in the game at the moment. A true leader both on and off the pitch and I don't think it's a coincidence that him having the armband led to the most harmonious, likeable dressing room and good attitudes for the vast majority of players who have played for us during that time (you'll always get the occasional Bright, Willian Jose etc but the ratio of good eggs to twats is better than I can ever remember it being).

Added to that - this was the best era in my time as a fan by an absolute country mile. He's such a huge part of that, along with Nuno and other key members of the squad since 2017.

Whenever I see Coady interviewed either pre/post match or doing media work for England, or even when he was on MNF on Sky, I feel a real sense of pride that he's our captain and neutrals also tend to speak of him in a very positive light.

I absolutely love the bloke and personally, I hope he's here for many years to come.

I agree, he's a legend, but it's all relative, I can see where WM is coming from, legend is a much overused word nowadays.
I think he'll stay here for all of his useful career now and I doubt anyone will question his legendness then.

Fair enough seems like I'm in the minority on this one. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to knock him, I think he's fantastic. To be honest it's nice to be even having the conversation on whether a current player qualifies as a legend, after some of the dross we've had playing for us relatively recently.

Think our fair WolfMan is demonstrating that things like "legends" have to catch at us at the right time in our lives.

Michael Jordan still seems more mythical to me than LeBron James, as an example. Sometimes it's harder to grasp what you're seeing when it's right in front of you.

Not meant as a dig at you in any way, WM.

I think its slightly nuanced - Coady clearly isn't one of our best ever defenders as a player (Boly is head and shoulders a better defender), but as a captain and leader he's by far and away the best I've ever seen at Wolves. Its also fair to say that our current success probably wouldn't have happened without him - the sweeper role was essential to our style in Nuno's first three seasons, there is no one else who could have done that role as well as him.
