Euro 2020

Top of the group, undefeated, 3 clean sheets.

Said it in their opening game they played like a newly promoted side to the PL that’s ultimately out of its depth.
Also emptying your tank in one game and don’t win it.
Rhetoric before the tournament was about how well they were going to do. Now it’s how brave they were.

Oh and giving wild cards to the 4 nation league play off winners great idea so far between them they’ve W1 D2 L6 F6 A20.
Likely that all 4 of them will go out at the first hurdle.

For all the bravado re Scotland , they have never qualified out of their group in any major tournament to date . A seriously disappointing statistic .

Does Kane not slow the play down for England ?

Maybe it's just his present form , but when the ball comes to him at the moment it's almost as if someone pressed the pause button . Seems to find it far too difficult to sort his feet out .
We need to see far more pace in the England attack if they are to progress deep into this tournament . The main reason that people were so praiseworthy of Saka was because of the runs that he kept making through midfield and beyond at pace - that's quite rare to see in an England shirt , but shouldn't be .

He just looks even slower than usual atm, not sure why.
Sterling also slows us down and he doesn't seem to be able to pick his time to run at defenders currently, often ends up running up blind alley's or just losing the ball. Saka and Grealish looked good first half yesterday.

It's all a bit 2006 World Cup at the moment. Bags of talent all over the pitch but playing very stodgy football. Not conceding goals. Best player miles off his game.

Neither Portugal nor Germany are to be feared and that's who we'll probably get, but we should be playing a lot more expansively with this group of players.

The problem that I see is that we can't seem to pass our way out of our own half. We pass it between the back 4 and the two centre midfielders but invariably it ends with a longer pass to one of the forward players and the possession is lost. I don't mind Sterling being on the defenders shoulder occasionally to exploit his pace behind them but we need to mix it up. Its been the same for a while now.
I'll get pelters for saying this but it worked better when Harry Winks was in one of the two centre spots because he did want to drive us forward whereas Phillips/Rice look for the safer option each time. Winks didn't deserve a place in the squad but for me Mount should have been used in the two in the last 12 months as has the ability to do the same plus more on top. That won't happen now in this tournament and its a crying shame as he has the ability, discipline and energy levels to do the role perfectly.

Pundits keep saying how well we're defending but I thought we looked all over the place when CZ put even a small amount of pressure on...mis controlling the ball, poor short passes etc.

You're right we did. We might not have conceded but we have played 3 teams we have far superior players than and any decent team is going to punish us.

Would need to be an unlikely set of results to get Portugal. They'd need to draw and Germany lose.

Tend to agree seems very much of doing just enough to get by currently.
Having said that I think France will want avoid coming to Wembley next week.
We’re protecting are weaknesses currently as opposed to playing to our strengths.
Whoever we get next Tuesday I fully expect a nervy tight game.

I agree. Wembley against England or a clash against a third place side. I'd say 1st or 3rd in their group would be preferable to them.

Southgate isn't going to play expansive football. He says he wants it but never sets up in any way to do it. He's too conservative to take any handbrake off.

Kind of similar to Nuno then...

First time England have done that in a tournament since 1966 apparently.

Will have to go off and google to see how you did in rest of that competition.....
Nice one - although the 66 team did include the world’s best goalkeeper (Banks), the world’s best defender (Moore) and the world’s best attacking midfielder (Charlton).
