Euro 2020

A better example would be when Man City do it is
Not really, City repeatedly get to the latter reaches of tournaments and fail. England don't.

Only since Southgate came in have we looked remotely decent. Iceland in 16, bottom of the group in Brazil, spanked by Germany in 2010. We didn't even qualify in 2008. We have a dreadful International record. Southgate aside it's 2 QF appearances in 25 years!!

To suggest anything but a win from here is a failure is extremely harsh, and as i said belittles what Southgate has achieved.

England are about the 5th-8th best team in the World, so getting to a semi in 2018 and a semi in 21 is above par.

That's not right is it? Quarter finals in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2012.

Yeah you're right, i was mixing up my tournament formats, those Euro QFs were 1st knockouts, but also QFs, unlike now.

But this strengthens my point, at best we have been a QF team for 25 years, now we have exceeded that 2 tournaments running.

I don't believe you can view getting to a particular round of a tournament as successful without looking at context. The WC was a successful tournament as we lost to a side who were better than us, beating those I'd expect us to along the way.

At the start of the Euros I'd have thought a loss to France or Belgium in the semi final for example would have been successful. A loss to Denmark wouldn't be as I believe we are a better side than them.

Wolves getting knocked out of the 1/4 finals of the EL was successful because of who beat us but if we'd drawn and lost to Basel at the same stage it wouldn't have been.

No one will underestimate Denmark especially in the England camp. Don’t agree with the comment England haven’t been tested. The game against Germany was very tight until we scored. The Scotland game provided a different challenge due to the motivation of the opponents.
Conversely Denmark are yet to beat top opponents yet either.
aye, agree Germany was a big test forgot about that..Scotland should have been brushed aside

Would you view our FA Cup run in 2019 as a disappointment? After all, we finished above Watford and they went down the season after...

Depends how narrowly you want to look at it. We should have beaten them because we were a better side with a 2 goal lead so the game itself was a failure, but getting there wasn't as we beat a side in United who you wouldn't expect us to. So I don't view it as such in the wider context.

As we sit here now if we go out Wednesday I’d be devastated. I think it were oils go down as another huge what if.

I think if we lose to Spain or Italy, it's a fair cop. Those are good sides and it's a toss of the coin. I am looking at context by recognising we aren't actually very good at tournament football.

Italy are 30 games unbeaten (?), Spain if they get to final will have shattered that. I just don't see the failure unless we win it thing, but we'll agree to differ, and hopefully it'll all be moot anyway!! :)

Once we beat Germany getting to the final became par performance. Anything less is poor now. If we lose on Wednesday it will ultimately be a missed opportunity and an upset. People can hype the Danes up all they like but we have better players and we're at home. Losing in the final to Spain or Italy would obviously be disappointing but acceptable.

For those saying Denmark will be a push around have to look at yourselves, they have played some brilliant football and England has not been tested yet..Im thinking 1-1 or 2-2 and overtime to decide the game..England has the better players all around but it wont be an easy game for sure
Who have Denmark played? Beat Russia and Wales and fortunate to beat the Czechs. All the teams England play seem to be fine until we beat them then they become shit.

The Danes have played very good football and also have a mentality link with the heartstop with Eriksen..I thinik you could have a bad sursprise if you think they are a walkover team..

In patches yes but so have England. I'm not suggesting it will be a walkover but England have better players and they're at home. We've lost about 5 competitive games at Wembley in 40 years. It's of course possible that we'll lose like it was yesterday but it will be an upset.

Pretty marginal failure imv, a wonder goal and last minute penalty.

They are actually a deserved 4th, 3rd in Europe.

Belgium 1
France 2
Brazil 3
England 4

It means feck all as you can see by 1 and 2.
We have possibly one of the strongest squads in world football.

Football though is a strange game where quite frequently shocks occur.
Iceland
France losing here
Holland Losing.

Winners of Tournaments rarely cone from teams that start superbly well, but always from those that improve as the tournament progresses.

Italy are playing superbly well but have not really improved since the opening gane against Turkey.
Denmark have not really improved performace wise just results wise, ignore Finland game we know what happened.
Spain have not really improved, just played the same a d are playing just about as well as they can.
England have played better in each game, solid and good going forward. They can actually play better.

Those of you that remember 2003 the first time Wolves never celebrated a result in either leg of the play offs, if i remember right players walked past banners at both Molineux and Reading, they said getting there was not the achievment.

This England team have said the same.
They are totally focussed on winning the next game from the final whistle.

We could lose this its a game between 2 teams and anything could happen, red Card, mistake, poor ref decision.

We dare to dream, but Denmark will be one fucking tough game

I was reading something the other day that he's instigated a load of changes in their domestic structure which the Belgian FA think are working really well, so he has goodwill from that.

But ultimately I'd be surprised if he ever won them a tournament and surely that's all that matters. Appoint him as technical director or whatever if you want him to do all the other stuff, he's there to manage the team.
