Euro 2016 watch

I think they are all better than Milner too!

Milner is a great utility player to have in the squad, can play in numerous positions..i would take him before wilshere if Jack doesnt see a football or break one of his ankles once again..i mean he hasnt had constant football for how many years now?

Thought is the big difference at the top level, Milner is severely lacking in that respect.

If he were to play in midfield alongside Dier there'd be no control of the game, no-one to set the tempo and start attacks off, you have the same problem with Henderson in there but at least he's a bit tidier with the ball than Milner. A fit Wilshere is the prime candidate there, Drinkwater maybe although he probably errs a bit more on the defensive side for the most part, in the future you'd be hoping for Barkley and/or Alli maturing and having the discipline to be able to play the deeper role if needed but at the moment I think they're both still a bit too unpredictable.

I think Drinkwater is far better than he is given credit for and will develop over time into a top international player. He starts for me. Like Jack Price he enables others to look better.

I like him, I think he had a very solid England debut but I'd still worry about the balance a bit if it were him and Dier sat deep as whilst they'd provide a solid base they wouldn't contribute a great deal of impetus going fowards, unfortunately I don't think there's really anyone that could play that role like Carrick could've done a few years back with his range of passing to set things going.

This is where the quality coach has to juggle his offensive options at full back and in the ten role to compensate.

I think the right man in that role makes a far bigger difference, look at City when they play Fernando/Fernandinho as the central pair, doesn't matter who they have as the front four usually as they barely get into the game. It's difficult to control a game from such advances positions unless you've got a huge advantage over your opponent, even in England's victory over Germany they failed to have anything like the control on the game that Kroos provided for the German's, their front players lacked the vibrancy of England's though.

I would expect against the better possession based sides England will play on the counter in a simple system much like Leicester City utilise.

But there aren't going to be that many games where England will be the underdog and able to take that approach are there? In majority of games they'll be heavy favourites and thus expected to take the game to the opposition.

Much depends on the coaches mentality going into the first game. Does he play to win or not lose. Play the opposition or the scoreboard. If you play to win you may select the better players on the ball like Kyle Walker and Jack Wilshere, if your cautious you go for the better defensive players in Danny Drinkwater and Nathaniel Clyne.

Roy is normally cautious.

Against the sides in our group Roy will get crucified if he plays on the break. I think we have enough quality to play against those teams though on the front foot anyway. Barkley and Alli (and if fit Wilshere) are players who play positively without fear. Dier, Barkley and Alli would be my three in midfield.

Milner is nailed on and Drinkwater surely goes if Henderson is indeed ruled out.

The Ox could end up back in the fold now.

I've got this at the moment, with one space:

Joe Hart
Fraser Forster
Tom Heaton

Kyle Walker
Nathaniel Clyne
Chris Smalling
Gary Cahill
John Stones
Luke Shaw (Ryan Bertrand)
Danny Rose

Eric Dier
Jack Wilshere
Danny Drinkwater
Dele Alli
Ross Barkley
James Milner
Raheem Sterling

Harry Kane
Wayne Rooney
Jamie Vardy
Daniel Sturridge
Danny Welbeck

The Ox could end up back in the fold or we play the safe option and take Jagielka.

I think I'd take the Ox instead of Drinkwater and I'd take Carroll instead of Sturridge.

We'd be very light on any form of holding midfielder if Drinkwater doesn't go now.

I'd look at Ox if Wilshere can't make it.

Interesting shout on Carroll - he's got a chance with a good end to the season.

As much as I hate talk about taking Carroll as an 'extra option' (lob the ball at his head), I thought he had a great game today. Although he could have had three yellows...

I like Carroll but he just encourages hoofing the ball. Better than Sturridge though.

Thought Carrick showed what he could bring to the England squad. I'd take him, different sort of player to others.
Glad to see Rooney back.

He had another good game tonight. I thought Carrick was outshone by Noble tonight, his legs have simply gone. I like Lingaard a lot and thought Smalling had another good game.

Unless Graham Poll was the referee, that would be difficult...

I thought he was well out of it til the last twenty, and that Carrick ran the game, and showed Noble's limitations.

Lingard is a clever player.

I think we've watched 2 completely different games there NWW. Don't think we'll ever agree.
