Thought is the big difference at the top level, Milner is severely lacking in that respect.
If he were to play in midfield alongside Dier there'd be no control of the game, no-one to set the tempo and start attacks off, you have the same problem with Henderson in there but at least he's a bit tidier with the ball than Milner. A fit Wilshere is the prime candidate there, Drinkwater maybe although he probably errs a bit more on the defensive side for the most part, in the future you'd be hoping for Barkley and/or Alli maturing and having the discipline to be able to play the deeper role if needed but at the moment I think they're both still a bit too unpredictable.
I think Drinkwater is far better than he is given credit for and will develop over time into a top international player. He starts for me. Like Jack Price he enables others to look better.
I like him, I think he had a very solid England debut but I'd still worry about the balance a bit if it were him and Dier sat deep as whilst they'd provide a solid base they wouldn't contribute a great deal of impetus going fowards, unfortunately I don't think there's really anyone that could play that role like Carrick could've done a few years back with his range of passing to set things going.
This is where the quality coach has to juggle his offensive options at full back and in the ten role to compensate.
I think the right man in that role makes a far bigger difference, look at City when they play Fernando/Fernandinho as the central pair, doesn't matter who they have as the front four usually as they barely get into the game. It's difficult to control a game from such advances positions unless you've got a huge advantage over your opponent, even in England's victory over Germany they failed to have anything like the control on the game that Kroos provided for the German's, their front players lacked the vibrancy of England's though.
I would expect against the better possession based sides England will play on the counter in a simple system much like Leicester City utilise.
But there aren't going to be that many games where England will be the underdog and able to take that approach are there? In majority of games they'll be heavy favourites and thus expected to take the game to the opposition.
I like Carroll but he just encourages hoofing the ball. Better than Sturridge though.
As much as I hate talk about taking Carroll as an 'extra option' (lob the ball at his head), I thought he had a great game today. Although he could have had three yellows...
He had another good game tonight. I thought Carrick was outshone by Noble tonight, his legs have simply gone. I like Lingaard a lot and thought Smalling had another good game.
