Euro 2016 watch

Please don't start Rooney Roy. He doesn't even deserve to go to the tournament never mind play.

Starting Rooney would do more damage than good. Imagine being a youngster in absolutely fantastic form for a whole season - you put impressive performances in during the pre-euro friendlies - but then your place in the team is snatched away from you because Rooney is "more experienced".

Fuck that. Play the best players. Rooney isn't in our best 11 - he makes the squad, sure. But not the team.

I'm all for the best team for sure. I think you could get Ali and Rooney in the same team.

Twice the trouble for defenders to worry about!

I think we all know he is going to be in the squad, and most likely start. He absolutely merits a place in the squad, he has a fantastic goalscoring record and he has been recognised as a very good captain. Whether I think he should start, I'm not sure. I hope there will be rotation for different games in this tournament. Rooney could play when we play a front pair but I'd be less inclined if we went with only one forward.

Safely say Carrick has no chance but for injuries of going now. I'd still take him ahead of Delph or Shelvey

Once you find the correct balance within the team its best not to upset it for individual talents. Does Rooney have a high enough work ethic without the ball to go hunting it high against very good possession based sides.

The question for me is a simple one. Forget whether he is captain, how many goals and caps he has, how his record at tournaments bar one 12 years ago is poor. Would a fit Rooney improve our first 11 in a position which suits him? I can see why some would say yes, but I don't want to see him on the left or playing number 9. Therefore based on yesterday that leaves him fighting for Alli's place or Alli dropping back and replacing Henderson...Not for me, naturally I'd have him in the squad if fit.

You say Alli may drop back in Henderson's place but yet they both played similar roles either side of Dier. It's 4-3-3 or a diamond. If Rooney plays then its in the hole of the diamond but then he has Barkley to compete with.

-------dier-----Wilshire---

----Barkley--Rooney---Ali--

--------------Kane-----------

Would be my front 6

Think you'd risk things getting very congested in the middle set up like that, perhaps not too dissimilar to what happened to Germany last night, Kane isn't really going to stretch a game with pace so you're left with not a great deal of space between the opponent's midfield and defence, Alli and Barkley would both be spending a lot of time very narrow so they all end up with nowhere to go if the opponents are reasonably organised.

Perhaps, but it also means we can press high up the pitch and pressurise the opposition which I thought we did brilliantly. Also gives the full backs the chance to provide the width and dier did a great job of covering them.

Scrommit.

Alli simply has a fantastic partnership and understanding with Kane. To shunt him out to the left to accommodate Rooney is foolish.

Left? Or left of a three as he was last night with a licence to roam in a fluid formation?

I just think setting up like that you'd need players who'd be more comfortable going wide to stretch a game if needs be, neither Barkley or Alli are really going to do much in that respect whereas last night it would've been more natural for Lallana and Welbeck to do so if they'd needed too. I've no issue with commiting to playing a narrow game but I think to make that work you need to stretch the game vertically so I'd prefer to use the diamond from the second half for that, any of Vardy, Sturridge or Welbeck are quick enough alongside Kane to assist with that and then with 3 banks to your midfield you've got a better setup to play between your opponent's lines and still have some width from your fullbacks.

Yep good points. I appreciate lalanna and welbeck give more width but I thought both were very average last night.

Vardy is made for that 30 mins off the bench role

For the first time though I feel we have players of equal technical ability so I feel like we did last night, we should use them

I think it's refreshing that there are now different options, a lot of players in the squad are quite flexible positionally now too which means it's not too difficult to switch between different systems mid game if needs be, last night's starting 11 for example could've easily switched the to diamond midfield without even making a change, pushing Welbeck up alongside Kane and sitting Lallana behind them.

It'll be interesting to see if Roy remains as flexible when the pressure is on in a tournament environment, there are good arguments for and against most members of the squad now and the different ways you could slot them together so it'll be good to see how it pans out, hopefully he doesn't go into his shell and revert to the tried and tested steady approach just looking to the youngsters to make an impact from the bench.
