Euro 2016 watch

Rooney best give First Choice a ring, he's not good enough to get in this England squad!

He is.
Let's stop this crap eh Steve.
I must admit for the first time
I am wary of starting him though,
But he's still a top player

I don't particularly rate him, there is a reason no-one knows his best position.

I will acknowledge his brilliant scoring record for England, whilst equally acknowledging his poor performance in finals.

Especially with his poor form this season and injury concerns he definitely shouldn't be a starter and if he can't prove his fitness I wouldn't take him.

What is very encouraging is there is a number of options we have now.

In just this game we have seen us play 4-3-3 and a diamond and looked like we have a good understanding of both systems. Barkley and Vardy came off the bench and were excellent. Rooney, Sterling missing who have been regular starters. Maybe it's better not to get bogged down in who starts but in the different options we have for different games.

After tonight our best team for me:

Hart

Clyne
Stones
Smalling
Rose (assuming Shaw won't be fit)

Dier
Henderson (I'd like to see what Drinkwater can do here though or Wilshire if fit)
Alli

Welbeck
Kane
Vardy

I can't see him starting with 2 out and out strikers in Kane and Vardy, it's more suited to chasing a game later on with Vardy's pace.

I'd have the same team, but with Lallana and I'd love to see Wilshere in too.

That front 3 plus Alli could be really fluid though, it wouldn't be two up front as such. 433 with all 3 comfortable coming from wide or down the middle. It could be a little open, but fuck it, just for once lets go for it

If Wilshere can get and stay fit he'd make a cracking trio with Alli and Dier.

I'd like to see a fit Wilshere with those 2 but Henderson showed second half for me that he can play and look good in this side. Work rate and versatility to play in that 3 and drift wide if needed. Far too easy to blame him and want someone else in the side but there aren't too many other option in that position.

Despite my reservations about him Rose did well tonight - albeit possibly caught a little on the second goal, if he's a bit more aware then that space out wide is shut out and they don't get to exploit the quick free kick. I'd still say Bertrand is a better bet though and Shaw is the best option we have by far if we can somehow get him ready.

Time's running out for Wilshere, I really like him as a player and would love to see him in that midfield three but this might be a tournament he has to sit out.

Rooney will go, we all know that but there is no way he should be guaranteed a starting spot, Kane is our best striker now and by some distance too.

As stated on the match thread Cahill was exposed for the limited Steve Howey-esque trier that he is, we should be moving on from him as a starter. Stones is the future so give him games.

This season, everything that Jamie Vardy has touched has turned to gold. He may well turn out to be a one season wonder, but at the moment he and Kane are the two best strikers on the league, and rather than have Vardy on the bench as an impact substitute, I would start him. Play him while he is playing as he never has before.

So in the cold light of day.

Ideally I'd pick;
Wilshire for Henderson
Rooney for welbeck
Barkley for lallana
Shaw for rose
Stones for Cahill
Hart for either keeper

The width comes from the full backs and a fluid system allows us to cause all manner of problems like we did yesterday.

I would still play Rooney, top goal scorer and captain. He should also be fresh for a change!
Appreciate I'm in the minority here but I feel too many are happy to discard
a important player well before time.

Apparently the only England captain not to play in the first game of a major international football tournament was David Platt at Euro 96 under Terry Venables, tough call for Roy, I expect Rooney to play if fit.

If Rooney plays it has to be behind the striker. He's not a number 9. However there's Ali and Barkley to factor in too!

The question for me is a simple one. Forget whether he is captain, how many goals and caps he has, how his record at tournaments bar one 12 years ago is poor. Would a fit Rooney improve our first 11 in a position which suits him? I can see why some would say yes, but I don't want to see him on the left or playing number 9. Therefore based on yesterday that leaves him fighting for Alli's place or Alli dropping back and replacing Henderson...Not for me, naturally I'd have him in the squad if fit.
