Euro 2016 watch

Why this obsession with moving Alli into an inferior position to shoehorn an ineffective Rooney into the starting line up?

I think Rooney has to play as part of a front two or as he did on the right against France coming inside.

In the world cup we struggled to accommodate him with the in form Sturridge (and Sterling). This time it is Kane and Alli. Fortunately, this time I think Roy has better solutions and a better pool of players to pick from.

They have because all those line-ups don't have Alli in his best position - behind Kane. Because Rooney is there.

He absolutely should be in the squad. However, he shouldn't be starting.

You must have been unhappy with last night's game then Pad?

Alli quite often rotates with Eriksen in being the most left sided of the attacking three behind the forward but he's not as effective.

I liked the balance of the team last night and Rooney doesn't fit into any of the positions for me. I'd still take him but he shouldn't be nailed on anymore.

You say Alli may drop back in Henderson's place but yet they both played similar roles either side of Dier. It's 4-3-3 or a diamond. If Rooney plays then its in the hole of the diamond but then he has Barkley to compete with.
Notionally yes, but Alli was the one that broke to support the attack more often that not. You play Rooney and Alli will have to sit more

Rooney might get a place in the squad but he shouldn't be anywhere near the starting 11. He can play as a 10 but absolutely nowhere else. Trouble is Alli, Barkley, Kane and Sterling can all play there too. Looking at my squad from the other day I'd probably drop Walker and take Rooney but he'd only be back up.

Lot of guff on 5 Live this morning about the 'leadership' and 'experience'. These tired old reasons come out every time we want to justify playing it safe with England team selections. The only time we've looked good at any tournament since 86 was in 2004 which was essentially down to the individual brilliance of an 18 year old. Sven and Shteve would sacrifice systems to accommodate star names and Capello took it a stage further by bringing retired players back into the side. The bets part of the performance last night was that we looked like a team - round pegs in round holes and tactically disciplined. Lets be brave and pick the right players for the system regardless of whether they play for Leicester or have 50 England goals.

My current 23 doesnt include either Walcott or Oxlade-Chamberlain.

I'm coming round to taking Walker and Clyne and having Dier as the emergency fourth centre half if needed.

Yes, Cahill, Smalling and Stones with Dier if absolutely needed there.

Looking at it today there are going to be some big names missing out. My guess at Roy's 23 today:

Hart
Forster
Butland (Heaton)

Stones
Smalling
Cahill
Rose
Walker
Clyne
Jagielka

Dier
Henderson
Lallana
Alli
Milner
Wilshere
Barkley
Sterling

Welbeck
Rooney
Vardy
Kane
Sturridge

One more forward than he'd normally pick, but I just can't see him leaving any of those out.

That leaves no Delph, Ox, Walcott, Jones, Drinkwater, Bertrand etc

That's the same as mine with the exception of Bertrand for Jagielka.

Wilshere would be the main one under threat as he can't go if he's got no football under his belt for a whole season.

Wilshere is a wonderful player but he is made of glass. If he can't prove his fitness then he becomes a huge risk. I would take Drinkwater instead.
