Espanyol (H) 20/2 Build-Up & Match Thread

We need to concede 5 to lose. We have never conceded 5 under Nuno.

We've conceded 8 in 9 games in 2020.

Fatalism is ridiculous at the best of times but just no. Espanyol are 80/1 to qualify with PaddyPower if anyone is that bothered although I would say that's quite a skinny price given all the elements in the equation.

They will play the reserves. Our championship reserves kept out Man City for 120 mins. Regardless of how weak the team is (it won’t be that weak, it’s not possible as we don’t have enough players), the way we play we aren’t conceding 5 without scoring to anyone.

Vinagre might play if he's fit (probably won't be though)
Kilman will probably play (already kept three clean sheets in the Europa League this season?)
Ruddy might play
MGW might play
Podence will probably play (good, we just spent £17m on him)
Outside chance Campana and/or Jordao will play

I'm going to say we'll be alright with that lot.

I hope Buur gets a chance too. I like the look of him.

Patricio

Boly Coady Kilman

Buur Donk Joao Jonny

Neto Jimenez Podence

Would be my team.

Donck at the back, MGW in midfield and Campana up front for me.

Depends on tomorrow of course and what happens, any knocks, how hard we have to work. We won't leave anything to chance but anyone who is part of this first team squad is trusted by the management or they wouldn't be here.

I was thinking along these lines earlier and thought about MGW......where exactly does he play in a 3-4-3?

You can’t really play him in a central two (he’s not disciplined enough) nor wide in a front three (just not good enough).

So unless we go 3-5-2 (which is extremely rare) - he’s not playing?

Surely we would play Campana from the start, just to see what’s he like.

Raul on the bench as backup.

Also both Neto and Podence up front as well.

Defence and midfield shuffling may will depend how the players pull up after Norwich- with Spurs to follow as the next League game.

Given there are virtually no consequences to this game then I don't mind trying him in a two.

He has to find a position at some point.

Touché but Espanyol aren’t Chelsea . . . and we did score twice.

5-2 Espanyol and we would be through anyway. The tie is absolutely over. That's it.

Pick any other two horse race in the world and assess the chances of an 80/1 shot pulling it off.

For reference any jobber playing Michael van Gerwen in the early rounds of a tournament will be absolutely nowhere near those odds, even if he habitually averages about 70.

Be ideal if Espanyol get something at Valladolid today. The more chance they have of getting out of the bottom 3 the weaker the team they play in the second leg but, as DW says, they're 80/1 and that's about right. For reference their next league game after today is home to Atletico Madrid on March 1st.

I'm torn between 352 and passing it around for 90 minutes or 343 and have a look at Campana up top. Certainly wouldn't have Raul (give him a rest) or Moutinho (yellow card) anywhere near the team.

See there are league games postponed in Italy today due to Coronavirus - must be a chance it will impact the Europa League at some point

I wanted to do it, but couldn't move the posts over via my phone.
