Mentioned this briefly last week I think - basically "standard" influenza constantly mutates and there are various strains of it around at any given time. The authorities have to make a best guess on which will be the most potent/virulent strand. Every so often they guess wrong and that's when the vaccine becomes ineffective, and people die. They have a good rate of getting it right though.

We can't really compare this event as we have no means of treating or preventing it properly.

Yes the vaccine that year was working around 30% -i just think hundreds dying a day was a major red flag to panic back then.
Where was the massmedia hysteria? i asked before but i seriously couldnt remember anything, by rights we should have been keeping all the vunerable indoors
for weeks but as i say, that was the flu without a name.

But as said before, we obviously learnt nothing from the 14/2015 Flu (with no name, so no mass panic) that killed 1000's in the first 3 months of 2015 alone.

Quite. I think it's an awful situation and not the time to blame.

As you know I am very cynical and will point out again that there was no hysteria in 2015 because the media were largely quiet - the big difference this time around is legislation like giving the Police powers to detain to protect public health (which would not have been admissable before Covid-19).
