Burnley (A) 30.03.2019

Cutting edge bantz from the big man.

I actually thought we played alright in patches. I thought Traore played quite well in the 1st half (Cav, on the other hand, had a shocker). I always had a feeling we’d struggle today. They desperately needed a win, we’ve generally been sluggish after the international breaks - and it would have been difficult for our lads to not have one eye on tuesday and also the cup semi final.

We’ll probably go and win on Tuesday now.

Careful mate. You sound like me

Just logged on to see a Cyber meltdown and his usual shite about teams lower than us.

Fuck that noise. Logging off.

Read the whole thread. Cyber may be an easy target but there is agreement that it's an issue to sort. Or feel free to bury your head. Your call xx

I think that's a grossly unfair take. It's a legitimate argument that only the most myopic choose to ignore.

To agree with Punts and Lycan, the 3-4-3 formation just doesn't work with the personnel we have. We cede control of the game and our wide forwards aren't good enough at this level. None of them. I would sell Costa, Cav and Traore in the summer and build a better 3-5-2 squad.

We can't operate at this level without a forward without the physicality of Raul and we need to buy a back up/ competition/ youngster to Raul if we want to go up a level.

We need two attacking full backs. Vinagre should've played today and whilst Traore was filling in he isn't the answer in that position in the long term.

I think we need an added midfielder too so that when Neves is off his game that player steps in.

I'm sure we'll address all of these issues in the summer and be stronger next season.

Today was just the odd bad day and it's nice to say that for our first season in the top flight.

OK. Palace we win away, lose at home. Unusual given that home form is generally better.
Brighton fluked their win.
Newcastle we fluked 4 points with two goals in stoppage time. Whilst it was fantastic to see Benitez suffer we didn't deserve it.

We have had a fantastic season. Personally I think we are higher than we deserve to be given the teams we have lost too. But, we have had some really stunning games against the bigger sides in league's and cup that allows supporters to forgive the games where we fucked up for whatever reason. I wm OK with any fan giving that argument but denying the issue exists cannot ever be right.

You look for patterns where others don't right?

Is it not a pattern we score late goals? We're the highest scorer of last minute goals in the league...that's a pattern, so isn't it an injustice to dismiss it was "fluking it" against Newcastle?

Feels dirty saying this, but I agree with Johnny.

Balanced by the injury time goal v Huddersfield or the 94th minute goal at Chelsea?

What can I say, I'm an innovator.

Not at all. We have outscored in the 90th minute by about 7 to 2

Palace
Huddersfield
Chelsea

Just to clarify. We could count arsenal at 87 mins.

Goals for Newcastle twice, Leicester, west ham, Shrewsbury in the cup, hardly 7 2

This for me is why aside from winning the Cup I don't want us to make the Europa League. We know Nuno likes working with a squad of around 20, no European football means he can continue to evolve that squad whilst cutting those who aren't at the level we now need them to be at. Playing in the EL would mean increasing the squad size and keep the likes of Costa and Cav on.

I didn't see the game today and have yet to see highlights, but I was disappointed Vinagre didn't start, I was hoping Nuno had understood that pace and direct running is our shortcoming against defensive minded sides.

Just Cyber and Paddington having handbags over nothing.

I think we finish in 8th anyway. Leicester will finish 7th IMO. Whatever you think of Brentdan he's a bloody good manager. Unless we win the cup the EL qualification is beyond us this season.

I think Nuno will keep his squad of 20 but with quantum upgrades for the first and youth teams.

Insert some trash about negativity.
Where does xG put us? Genuine query, it's a method of understanding if you're punching over your weight or not.

We looked "slow" today, not poor like we were against Huddersfield but we weren't great(obvs).

Thought Cav was busy but ineffective and Jota was just ineffective.

The move to 343 did not kill us, the removal of Adama did. He went off and Burnley pushed 10 yards forward, leaving us without the ability to punish them through pace or trickery.

Thought Burnley played well, restricting out shooting and staying compact. Deserved the WIN IMO

shit I thought the game was tomorrow!

welp. looks like I didn't miss much. lineup looks weird. the goals given up look pretty disappointing. will catch up on full thread later to see how we looked overall. womp womp.

Include Palace and Newcastle and it is fine though.

I wouldn’t say 21 points from 15 games against fodder was “fine”, but still. You think it is so the argument between yourself and cyber/whoever will never come to an agreement as your goalposts are in different places.

Where people put arbitrary cut offs in the table to form their arguments is the issue. And hey, each decision to do that in the table has its merits. My whole table breakdown shows we have picked up points from everywhere in the table.

As above, we have clearly underperformed (points wise) against the lower half of the table, this is a fact not an opinion. It doesn’t matter whether your cut off is bottom 3,5,7,8, we’ve still underperformed. Everyone else is our mini league or Sky 6. The real cut off is the bottom 3. 4 points from 5 games against 3 of the worst teams ever at this level, that just isn’t good enough and if we want to enter the sky 6 then that needs to be a 14 point return minimum.

I do agree though that if we could have picked up the STUPID points we lost against some of the poorest sides we would be making the Chelsea hairy starfish quiver and shake, but that is probably for next season and beyond. THAT is our passport to the top table. I am confident we will get there. Well you’ve responded to my point here. To progress we need to be putting these teams away. Let’s go for the cup, let it be with the league and then kick on next year with a year of experience behind us and less FFP restraints
.
