Lycan and I had a much more tolerable experience getting in and out of the ground compared to a lot of Wolves fans as we (entirely inadvertently - thanks Google maps) approached the stadium down the cliff at the back of the ground rather than from up the hill. A large number of Wolves fans with tickets in the official away section didn't even get into the ground until after at least two of the goals. Some people only saw the second half. Feel very sorry for them.
The only slightly hairy moment for me was when three police armed with really long batons after the match all took on a warrior stance and cornered me as I was trying to go to a trailer where fans had been asked to store their umbrellas before the game (yes, I had an umbrella - the rain has only just stopped here in Porto since I arrived yesterday at noon).
As for the day, it was surreal seeing so many Wolves fans so far from home. The atmosphere was great. Got some amazing videos. Only real downside for me was the weather, which has been truly horrendous. Probably the worst conditions I've seen at a football match. And the pitch showed it.
As for the match, unlike some people I was with (ahem), I was sober enough to enjoy it! What an incredible first half. I actually missed their first goal as I was posting a photo in the matchday thread [emoji23]
We were unplayable at times. Moutinho majestic in midfield, including once when - despite the ball landing in a six inch puddle in front of him - he totally mugged off an opposition player with an outrageous Cruyff turn and set us off on attack.
Jonny's cross for our first was excellent. He should do this more often. Raúl for our second was imperious stuff. At times, it's like he has games under his total control. Adama's confidence must be sky high right now - what a strike for our third.
Half time came too soon for us really. We were so dominant.
Second half was a disappointment which, for a couple of hours post-match, threatened to ruin the whole trip until a sense of perspective kicked in. Two sloppy goals to give away, but the main things for me were (i) obvious fatigue (god knows what that pitch will have taken out of our players' legs) and (ii) our bench still isn't strong enough.
Overall, though, you've got to be happy with where we are and what we've achieved. The sight of our players playing so well in Europe isn't something I ever thought I'd witness. We were so dominant at times in that first half. There's a real feeling of us building something special here.
Porto is a lovely city by the way. Lots of sightseeing today to the soundtrack of the distant sound of some hoarse black country accents, singing. The waiter in the restaurant I'm in is mixed race with a beard and has had a table of 10 serenade him with Nuno Had A Dream for the best part of two hours. Notwithstanding the trouble in the week (largely attributable to the Liege fans, by all accounts) the Porto locals really do seem to love all things Wolves.
