Best England Cricket XI - 1978 to 2020

My apologies as ever for being born when I was. Or being born full stop.

Out of interest DW, when did you get into your cricket? I’d have thought you’d have seen him 1990 to 1992 ish.

1989.

I saw him but he was done by 91 I think?

He was. The mid eighties was his zenith and you are too young to remember. It's like I can remember Zico and Socrates I guess.

Gower was imperious on his day. A true joy to watch. Knocks Root into a cocked hat for me. The interesting debate I am looking forward to is KP. He for me , influenced English test cricket in the same way as Gilchrist did for Australia. Some remarkable ,explosive match winning innings. Now you lot have Stewart keeping KP is a shoe in somewhere surely?

So far we have
Cook
Gooch

Stewart Wk

Have I got that right?

There’s no way people on here will be picking KP. Shoe in for me, but it’ll only be me.

Thorpe, Vaughan, Bell, Lamb, Smith, Pietersen, Gower, Root. They can’t all get picked.

Kp is the most destructive game changing player in that list. That's not saying he is better. Just unique. Like Botham.A one off.

If Root makes this team you haven't been watching test cricket.

So

Cook
Gooch
Trott
Pietersen
Gower
Botham

Stewart

Will be my picks.

I’m beginning to think that shoehorning Vaughan in at 3 would have been a good idea so that he can captain the side.

We already have Cook, Gooch and Stewart as captains, and Gower may well make it as well.
