Aston Villa 1-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

Adama proved last night why we shouldn't offer him another contract. For a player thats supposed to help with a press his reluctance to take on Mings and amble out when the ball was sent to there left back was shocking. Podence coming off injured and Traore coming on was the catalyst of us being on the back foot most of the 2nd half.

Hwang definitely got lucky with that tackle. I think the only thing that saved him was it was low enough and only with one foot. Any higher and it would have been a straight red.

Bueno's handball would have gone against the rules to be given. Any ricochet off another body part before hitting the arm/hand and it rightfully isn't a penalty.

I don't particularly have a dog in the fight, but Mark is hardly the only poster to use that emoji in an arguably negative/mocking way, isn't that why it was temporarily removed in the first place?

Surely either we all have the right to use it without being pulled up on it or none of us do?
Ironic that some of the folk complaining about Mark using it have done the very same thing themselves on many occasions. But so what? It's a fucking emoji!? If people are so thin skinned that a laughing emoji winds them up I'd say that's their problem, not Mark's.

Our subs yesterday of Gomes, Hodge and Traore...now I sound like a broken record but recalling Sanderson, Giles and Cundle even would offer just a little bit more in that moment even if they don't have long term futures with us. Let's see what transfer activity happens in January first at least, but any struggles come the 31st then at a bare minimum I'd have Sanderson around the squad.

What happened to Sa last night? Went from looking like a world-beater against Utd to a pub player. Couldn't kick, looked nervous, flapped at that free kick that was pretty much straight at him, rather than catching it. Rushing off his line at the end nearly costing us a point.
Just is what he is. “Eccentric” so just does daft shit you don’t understand but then makes an incredible save against Garnacho getting out quickly and down. It’s not something you can particularly rely on long term though not knowing if your GK is going to keep you in the game or throw it away or potentially both.
I agree with DW, in that I thought we were very lucky to keep Hwang on the pitch. That was a horrible tackle and I've seen red cards given for less. Very susprised VAR didn't overturn the decision and upgrade it to a red. Had it been the other way around and a yellow had been given, we'd have been furious. I'm not as convinced by the handball shout on Bueno, though. Oatley said on comms there was a rule about it not being handball if it bounces off a players own foot?
Think we are lucky with the Hwang one no one really made a meal of it and it was Hwang. I think it is just a yellow but they have been given. We can’t give Refs the opportunity to send players off as you say it wouldn’t have been overturned if a red was given and I’ve seen sendings off for less.
Just to clarify the point I was trying to make last night. 4 points from Julen's first 3 games is a reasonable amount and a definite improvement. But if we really want to start pulling away from the bottom three, we need to start converting performances in to points. With a bit more concentration and less individual errors, we could easily have taken 7 points from his first three games. Cut out those errors & get more bodies in through the door and hopefully we'll start to pull away. But it's not right that we should just be relying on three other teams being worse than us.
We’re not going to pull away that quickly (if at all), particularly as we started what 4 points plus GD off safety 3 games ago. We’ve already got that to 1 point and in touching distance of another 4 clubs. This is a positive not a negative regardless if we are still in the relegation zone at an arbitrary moment of the season. Forest aren’t going to play Saints every week etc. Teams are going to win games. And even if Forest do go on a decent run, it probably means they’ve beaten other teams in the bottom half (Leicester for example) which means another team has been dragged there anyway.

I mean come on. Is Sanderson any better then Gomes, for me no. Giles is never getting anywhere near Beuno or Rayan and Cundle is just the same as Hodge. So in a nutshell bringing those back into the squad makes no marked improvement coming off the bench as the ones you think are inferior.

Completely agree. We had got 10 points all season until Lopetegui's arrival, so to expect us to suddenly get 6 points from three games seems a bit far-fetched. We're in a much better position now to get out of trouble than we were before the WC. This was never going to be easy, but there a lot of teams in and around us (Leicester downwards) and we've stayed in touching distance, despite having the same squad as we've had all season.

Killman needs to get over what’s distracting him, it’s probably something stupid like having Ukrainian parents, relatives probably getting bombed on a regular basis, not knowing what’s going on, but yea just man up eh? How dare he get distracted by that
Then let him have time off, if that is the case.

It’s the consistency of the thing.

If Mark thinks dropping Kilman for Toti is stupid, fair enough. But it’s definitely annoying when it’s regular on every Matchday or Verdict thread. This goes back weeks and I let it lie until yesterday.

Laugh, cry, do whatever. But make a point to go with it.

I didn’t and haven’t seen anyone else say they “expected” more points. But when you look at the position we found ourselves in, in both the Utd game and last night, with better game management and less individual errors, we could have been on more.

If we start converting what we should be getting in to actual points, we’ll be fine.

It's going to take more than a week in Marbs for him to get over the systematic destruction of his ancestral homeland.

That's assuming that was the root cause of his brainfart last night. I'm more inclined to believe that he had a bad day at the office and will hopefully learn from the experience.

Dropping him would be the worst possible move at this point. Apart from being fickle af, it would shatter his diminishing confidence at a time where we should be helping him rebuild back to 2021 levels.

Cundle is levels above hodge in ability.

All fine, I don't quite agree and think they would've been used better personally - but I'd still rather buy new players as none are up to the job. However in August I had the same hope and we didn't get the players over the line then either. I was more directly comparing Giles to an IF role, not Beuno FYI. But Sanderson is the one I'd rather have nipping at heals to ensure the standards of our current CBs is better than one injury away from a bombscare, especially considering how we have moved to 3 at the back in recent games.

Is Dion still on our books? Feels like an age since I've heard him come up.

We’ll get a little bit of money for him. A bit like Giles if we hadn’t shifted their loans mid season last year probably would have got some money in the summer for him. Imagine we’ll now try to sell him with a sell on. To me seems a solid championship defender

We were as close to zero as we were to more. So I’ll take the 4 and think we ended up the right side of fine margins from a neutral standpoint.

Absolutely.

No chance we deserved to win at Everton, we fought hard against United but I don't think you can paint it as massively unfair that we lost a tight game, and we nearly lost at the end last night.

We have a squad with limited options and some of them are objectively shite, we aren't suddenly going to start averaging 2+ PPG. Just get enough points, which is what we're doing.
