Angel maria Villar, the President of the Spanish football association and the most powerful man in Spanish football, always said he wanted Lopetegui as the new manager of Spain. Whereas, every top manager or chairman in Spain opted for Caparrós. Lopertegui will be quiet and not conflictive, Caparrós seen as a better manager, says what he thinks and is not an establishment man.
As has been said, Wolves probably had another offer with Li. Lopetegui looks like he saw this fall through, so took the Spanish job.

I am obviously happy that Lopetegui never came to Wolves. It was more about, what was good for Mendes and not what was good for Wolves.
