U23s retained list

Levingston, Hayden and Simpson get 1-year deals with 1 year option

Upton, O’Hanlon, Reid and Delacoe released
.

Why in the blue fucking hell have we given Hayden ANOTHER new deal? He's 20 now and he's never going to be anything like good enough. Simpson I can just about accept, haven't seen enough of Levingston.

No complaints about the four who have gone, Reid wouldn't have got another new deal last year if he hadn't broken his leg and got his stay extended out of goodwill, O'Hanlon should have gone a couple of years ago, if he were right footed he wouldn't get a game for Stourbridge.

To be fair to Reid he was in mad scoring form before he badly broke his leg. That got him the extension.

As far as I know Deslandes, Randall, Breslin, Rainey and Nazon are also out of contract but we probably do have a year's option on all of them. Maybe we've taken them all up (we shouldn't have bothered with any of them bar perhaps Breslin, and if he wasn't in contention to play in the first team this season when we had Doherty and Saville as options, maybe he never will be).

The club have confirmed that now:

All the other players within the Under-23 ranks are either already under contract or have had their options exercised.

Wasn't Hayden regarded as the most impressive player in the U23s cup run?

Nope as he didn't play (assuming you mean the Checkatrade run).

If you're 20 and the best loan spells you can get are at Hemel Hempstead and Bromley then you aren't going to make it.

What competition was it that they just got to the semifinals of?

Anyway he's a youth player so surely there isn't any great harm in keeping him.

We got to the promotion play offs in the U23 Prem League 2.

We finished 2nd in the league (Hayden barely played as he was either injured or out on loan) and qualified for the playoffs, the semi-final of which we lost on Monday.

It's not like it cripples the wage bill if we keep him on, it's just completely pointless. We do it a lot. Cassidy, O'Hanlon and Kellerman just to name three from the last couple of years. Players who everyone 100% already knows aren't going to make it and will be lucky to get any kind of Football League career.

Ah. My mistake.

At any rate the optimist in me says to give kids every chance to succeed. If they aren't good enough, like the three you mentioned, they'll find their level (like the three you mentioned).

I wouldn't be a good club exec. Too emotional, too sentimental.

There's being optimistic and there's doing stuff which flies in the face of all reason. At the age of 21, Danny Batth - who lest we forget, is no worldbeater and even coming through the Academy was never pegged as such - had played 71 League One games in his various loan spells. Aaron Hayden will turn 21 in January and I bet he won't ever play one League One game. Like I say, the clubs he is going out on loan to speak volumes (same went for O'Hanlon who played for Corby last season and we still gave him a new deal).

I'm not raging about it :icon_lol: It'll annoy me a lot more if we give Saville, Williamson or Stearman a new deal. It's just a weird thing to do and we're repeat offenders. You'd think we'd learn.

Presume all u23 deals are done on the approval of Johnny's bestest bud, big Kevvy T?

We're just paralysed by fear that anyone we release will become the next Winnall etc who look a lot better after leaving so retain everybody.

EEL is the embodiment of this, shown absolutely nothing he'll ever be good enough for Championship football but still got himself a contract until he's 27 on the off chance he stops being shite.

EEL will go to Sheffield Utd by the sounds of it.

That's the daft thing. I saw a lot of Winnall, Malone, Mendez-Laing and the rest and you could see those 3 stood out a mile. Winnall was miles better than MacAlinden and always on my lists. I was surprised when we released him.
