Wolves Academy Thread

Cheers. Was looking the other day on Soccerway. Had info on U23 league but not on that cup. Gunna try and come to the playoff final then if we make it. Thought I might go to Leamington but I don't really fancy u18s.

Is it straight knockout or two legs?

Straight knockout. We're done.

Penalty sounds like a proper shocker.

Just back from the game. I saw it as a game of two halves with us bossing the second and WHU responding positively after the break. Neither side did enough to earn the win but WHU got a very soft penalty, their player was 'clipped'(looked like a dive) and as the ball was about to run out of play (he had no chance of getting it) the ref gave a silly penalty. Generally the ref was really poor and it's clear he referred u23 games for a reason.

Ruddy - 6/10 - no chance with the goals but looked class with his feet. No real saves to make.
Simpson - 5/10 - bombs forward far too often and as such he's always having to make up ground on the opposition winger. Didn't really do much of note while going forward.
Johnson - 6/10 - generally sound minus a few fouls in the first half.
Hayden - 7/10 best defender of the lot in my eyes and looked solid with good feet.
Deslandes - 6/10 - took his goal well and was generally fine but will be disappointed that he gave the winger so much room to whip in a great cross for the first goal.

Finnie 5/10 - quite similar to price but didn't seem to have as good a range of passing and struggled to stamp his mark.
Herc - 6/10 - super first half drawing several good saves from the keeper but faded vastly and lost influence in the second half
Armstrong - 4/10 didn't really influence the game at all, some strong runs but his final ball was lacking
Randall - 7/10 another who had an excellent first half but faded in the second, needs to improve his crossing a bit more as he wasted good positions in the second half

Wilson - 6/10 quiet but always a threat, never selfish and forced good saves from the keeper
(Side note - I think the decision to swap him for Livingston was an awful one and cost us the game as he showed signs of getting back into the game and the sub which switched us to 1 up front wasn't needed as they attacked via the wide areas all game - we ended up easing the pressure and wasting a sub)
Ennis - 6/10 - similar to Wilson

The subs didn't add anything much. No doubt the u23s will be disappointed but I'm sure they'll bounce back

Thanks for that. Out of interest how many were there this evening?

Penalty incident is on @Wolves_Academy Twitter feed. Very weak.

Cheers for that. Shame about the result

I was at the game too, we did seem abit reluctant to press them when they had the ball but for most of the time they did nothing with it, WHU goalie kept them in it and made a cracking double save shortly after the break but that pen was a utter disgrace, was right by where i was and our player hardly touched him and the ball was running quickly out of play when all the happened plus if it was a pen our player should have seen red but didnt even get a yellow.

I feel really sorry for the lads as ive seen them a number of times this season and we deserved better to go out to a blatant dive, shocking.

the West Ham player was slowing down and moving towards our player, for me its not a pen, but the fouls he was giving them all match and all the times we were going up for headers and there player backing into us and nothing was given disgraceful

You watched the game, I'm certainly not going to dispute your view of the match and based on that video I don't think it's a penalty, but it's canny or cheating from their player dependant on your view and naive from ours.

Just watched the video highlights and if he didn't push him in the back he wouldn't have given the ref the decision to award a penalty.

It's incredibly soft but he has made it easy for the ref.

Yep, lesson learned. In those situations don't give them anything. It's soft as anything but there was a hand on the players back

I'm struggling to see how it's not a pen. Pure stupidity from the defender.

Back home after 7 hrs of driving & cost of an overnight stay!!

Wouldn’t disagree with jagginman’s scores, but some thoughts:

Noticeable that Ruddy was very vocal & can kick, unlike any of our other keepers – no chance with either goal, but solid otherwise

Deslandes was 10yrds too near his CH most of the time, West Ham sussed that out and kept pinging balls over his head to the wide man. Took his goal well, but owed his team that for a shot so poor when put through that if it hadn’t been deflected out for the corner he scored from then it would have been off the side of the pitch nearer to the half way line.

Hayden was our best player so if you are going to sub a CH don’t sub him, strong & composed and brought the ball out on occasions. Johnson was doing a Christophe Berra tribute act all night & whilst the penalty was soft (and the WH player was looking for it) you don’t touch a player who is not going to get anywhere near the ball before it goes out. Gave the Ref an easy decision.

Midfield didn’t have enough control at any point & were out shadowed by WH’s no 4 (Dobson) – though this is a player who has spent half the season & 21 games in Lg 1 with Walsall, though the best player on the pitch was Declan Rice one of their CH’s.

Not enough control or impetus from us, Randall being the only one who tried to inject any urgency into proceedings until he tired.

Final point of the Ref – looked as if he was treating this as if it were his first televised Premier League game & he was determined to be the star - poor
