Wolves 2 v 1 Liverpool: The Third Round Verdict

1st - Unlucky, Basically sums up the day as that could have gone anywhere
2nd - Shit defending and his touch is actually taking it behind the Southampton attacker but Breen is in the way and can;t do anything about it (but it would be filed as could maybe do better)
3rd - Lovely goal
4th - Nice move and got unlucky that the blocked shot came back to the player
5th - No chance...who the frig left a player with that much space though!!
6th - Shit kick under pressure which is his fault, great finish though

6-0 on paper looks awful but it was far from a horror show, as you described it, for Murray

Great shots of the Wolves fans laughing just before the 6th goal. It was a truly ridiculous game

For balance Ruddy has a 6-1 and 7-0 stuffing at Man City on his books from his Norwich days! Guess Rui should start next week!

So- in Summary :asskiss: for many TWF posters.

To conclude 4 pages on a this thread or therabouts on an off topic subject, the concensus is we have never had 2 better goalkeepers here at the same time however we have had a better goalkeeper called Matt Murray who didnt play anywhere near enough and had he stayed fit would have still been here.

If Murray had stayed fit then he wouldn't have stayed at Wolves.

If Murray didn't have Poppadoms for legs I doubt we would have been able to keep him

We have used pretty much the same tactic on goalkicks under Nuno. Ruddy last season sent the majority to Doc or Douglas. A lot would go out of play as they went over the players. This season Rui only has Doc to target and we get the same issue (although in the Palace game Doc kept coming to far off the touchline and missed the header by miles). Ruddy started out doing the usual but his target of Jonny meant they all pretty much went out of play so he went to kicking straight down the middle.

Yeah I know it’s been a tactic the entire time, and quite a good one. The crowd haven’t worked that out yet though...

We are having to do it more as teams aren’t letting us play short and we aren’t as comfortable/willing to take the ball under pressure. Ruddy did shank a fair amount on Monday though (more then Rui normally) which I thought was unusual.

Ruddy also cleared halfway pretty much every time, which Rui doesn't.

At some point he's going to properly fuck up off a backpass, I don't understand why he is so bad in this area when everything else is exemplary.

.

I guess if we are putting more out of play than winning headers it looks very shit and you blame the keeper. Early part of the season Rui was hitting them poorly so they were getting nowhere near Doc but he has improved on that but Doc has either had a 6ft + player put on him or got his movement wrong in the last month.

We did one (v Bournemouth I think), where we set up for the standard and then Boly pulled away and Rui played a short ball to him. We need to do that a few more times in a game

We should stick Benno there just for goal kicks. Double up and he'll win it most of the time.

I don't have a problem with the restarts, it's open play where Rui's thighs of a girl will cost us.

I don't watch a lot of Portugese football but from how he has handled being put under pressure I guess at Sporting if he got a ball played back to him he generally had loads of time and could pick a short pass rather than have a player chasing him down, so not a skill he has had to work on. He has at least stopped always looking for the WB when under pressure and gone for the just kick it wherever you can option, which has helped a lot. Since he changed I can only think of 1 he has got horribly wrong and that is when he sent the ball about 60 yards straight up in the air and back down 5 yards in front of him.

If he can have the same hit rate as Murray (1 in 97 games) then I can live with that. We always lived in fear that Berra's WWE moves on corners would cost us but never really did

Under no pressure he has a great pass in him. Glorious 50 yard pass v Newcastle...Coadyesque

Goals 4 and 5 are the result of absolutely embarrassing defending.

What was the offside rule then? Was it the old 'daylight' nonsense? I think goals 1 and 3 probably get called offside by today's rules.

Yeah, watching that, goals 1 and 3 were definitely offside when the ball was played

No way was Murray better than Rui. Not even the same level.

"we have never had 2 better goalkeepers here at the same time" is disputed by those who watched Wolves in the 1950s (see post #109). So your summary is dismissing history. I'm glad that the club does not do that!

Murray was fantastic whilst not being at his peak and still better than Rui is now.

Both good shot stoppers but Murray was King of the area - a beast !
