Wolves 2 v 1 Liverpool: The Third Round Verdict

Why oh why did you get involved in this. It will never end well and the answer to the question, how many caps could Matt !urray have had will end up being 'bananas'.

Welcome to the party!

The arguments are about Wolves players. Denis Irwin would win any full back competition if you take pre Wolves career into account, Ince the same for centre mid, Flowers would be in the goalkeeping conversation post us, but that's not the debate

So you dig at me not the person who introduced the Bruce Tarkowski argument?

I would laugh if Ruddy got another call up!

That was me. I'm not schizophrenic

Sorry how many games have Tarkowski and Bruce had for wolves then?

You are a very strange man. I'll let everyone else work out your contradiction for themselves

Rui Patrício is on another level to any keeper we've had here before. He's incredible. Week after week he pulls off amazing saves. He's having the same kind of influence on this season as Murray had on McCarthy's first season in charge but at a much higher level.

I don't think he does, he's very good but Matt Murray was absolutely the reason for us finishing 5th in 2006/7. We'd be more or less where we are now if John Ruddy had been in nets.

Plus he kicks like a girl and it really annoys me.

I thought Lofty twatted Clive Clark(e)?

Very surprised that Paul Bradshaw hasn't had a mention (unless I've missed it somewhere). Boswell is the worst goalkeeper I've had the misfortune to see in a Wolves side.

You could be right, it was a long time ago. Brown definitely took the penalty that followed.

John Burridge is another to add to the not great, but memorable, list.

Best two saves this year so far have been Patricio Vs Sterling and Ruddy Vs Shaqiri. I think Rui is the better keeper, but there's at least 3 goals against Huddersfield, Cardiff and Watford he should have done better on. I just don't see him on that uber level, I said in the Summer it was a marginal upgrade, that was wrong but I don't think it's a significant one either.

Ruddy’s kicking was bloody atrocious on Monday. It actually surprised me as I don’t remember it being bad and I wanted to compare him to Rui. He hit that nice one out his hands to Jota but his ground kicking was horrific. It ended up being so bad he resorted to just kicking it to Moreno / Fabinho (I can only assume he wasn’t aiming for Doc anymore as they were no where near him) but just booting it straight down the middle.

Thinking about it Ruddy didn’t have to take my GKs as teams wouldn’t press us like they do now so the short ball was always on.

Tbf if you get halfway through a season with only 3 or 4 goals you "could do better on" that's pretty good. You could probably find that number of goals for any keeper in the world.

Ask Spurs' and they'll tell you Lloris had two such concessions against us alone.

Murray was not only a good shot stopper (but probably not at Rui's level), but the way he commanded his box was unrivalled, not just at Wolves but from any other keeper I'd seen. He owned that 18 yard box and just plucked crosses out of the air like low hanging fruit.

Murray was definitely a better all round keeper than Patricio.

We have used pretty much the same tactic on goalkicks under Nuno. Ruddy last season sent the majority to Doc or Douglas. A lot would go out of play as they went over the players. This season Rui only has Doc to target and we get the same issue (although in the Palace game Doc kept coming to far off the touchline and missed the header by miles). Ruddy started out doing the usual but his target of Jonny meant they all pretty much went out of play so he went to kicking straight down the middle.

Well this thread has been a lot of fun! Real feeling for Matt Murray on here. Perhaps because I am not local to wolverhampton my view is a little skewed. (That would also, on reflection , explain some of my positivity for Ruddy from his Cambridge days , much the same for me as Will Norris, who remains a decent keeper but not in Rui or Ruddys class.)

I do feel for Matt that his premier league appearance was the 5-1 stuffing at Blackburn. That coupled with his horror show in the 0-6 v Southampton may have really skewed my judgement I concede. Many of you saw a lot more of him live than I did then. He was great at Reading when I saw him and fantastic in the play off final. I can only have seen him live a couple of times more other than those. Ruddy was getting plaudits at Cambridge when he started and looked the part in a poor side. He also did very well for Norwich until relegation and then he fell out of favour. I was pleased to see him come here and even more pleased to see him return to the form and consistency that earnt him his cap.

It is a real shame that Murray didnt play more. A career of under 100 games in 10 years is poor return. He is still only 37!

Horror show for Matt? He made 1 error in that game and that was the only time his shit kicking cost us a goal but we were 5-0 down at that point. That game was a complete freak.

When have you ever seen or heard of a team applauded off after losing 6-0 at home?

They had five shots on target I believe!

Breen thundering the ball in under zero pressure and Kightly missing the penalty (awful effort) was a stunning couple of minutes.

On the Ruddy v Murray thing. Obviously career wise, Ruddy has had it better but Wolves career v Wolves career, Murray wins hands down. Ruddy was superb last season but in Micks 1st season, Matt won us so many points it was ridiculous. He was a beast of a keeper. You often saw Mick celebrating as if we had scored when Matt was picking out crosses that no other keeper in the Divsion would even think of coming for. His understanding with the defence was also amazing. Our CB's knew that a cross into the box that they just needed to go towards our goal as Matt was coming to take the ball and they just added security incase he fumbled it (Leeds away in that season was a prime example, as Matt dropped 3 crosses and Leeds never came close to scoring from the opportunity)

6 but one of them was put away from an on target shot that was saved

The Breen OG was great, he stuck his leg out under no pressure 6 yards out and it went goalwards, he didn't even bother trying to stop it

For those who want to self torture.

First two goals would have caused debate on the blame game thread for Murray. Gets a big hand hand on both the first goal (unlucky) and second goal( should do better) So two of the six were Matts and yes only 5 shots on target all game!
