Wolves 2 - Cambridge 1 verdict thread

With Coady and Saville as full backs it was always going to be an overall negative. Zenga has highlighted the need for defensive and striking reinforcements to perfection though and we didn't forfeit our place in the cup in the process so overall it can't be bad.

Wallace - Another good performance and deservedly got a goal and could have had at least 1 more. Looks like he will only get better and i have no idea how we sent him out on loan last year.

Possibly because he wasn't very happy. He's a southern lad and was, at the time, much happier being much closer to home when with Pompey.

However, I believe that situation has changed somewhat and he is now much happier in the midlands, getting regular run outs.

Sounds like more negative than positive, but at least we won.

Only real negative for me was not scoring 4 or 5 like we should have.

The defence wasn't an issue as I doubt we will ever see that line up in the League (if we do we have been destroyed by injuries)

I'm hoping Prince was rusty, and maybe hasn't played in a while. 2 or 3 good passes isn't enough and the game just passed him by.

I thought he was meant to be a physical player but he looks tall but quite slight, can't see him being a physically imposing player in the championship.

Left work late and thought I'd take in some live football so went to see Oxford v Brighton. Finished 4-2 to Brighton and was an entertaining game. What amazed me was, despite Brighton putting out a reserve team and Oxford playing a more or less full strength 11, the difference in quality between the two sides (considering there's only one league difference) was scary. Oxford had a fair few spells but Brighton's reserves were much better with the ball in possession and in front of goal. Pains me to say it but Oxford have a young lad on loan from Albion who looked good. Either way, against a League 1 side they were always in control - so it's disappointing that we couldn't put a League 2 side to the sword (we never do!).

From the brief highlights I have seen, Costa looks lightening quick and it's not surprising he asked to come off after running himself in to the ground. Very happy with him, John, Wallace & Graham as wide options. Less said about their goal the better - absolutely woeful from Iorfa and Hause.

First black mark against Zenga, for me.

Why pick Saville at LB? He's a MF, yet there are two LBs sitting on the bench.

Conversely, it was brave to play Iorfa and Hause together but a good idea to see how they went.

My nephew went to the game and said he didn't think much to the goalie nor Prince but thought Costa was 'shit off a shovel' fast.

Dearie me. The defending from Iorfa & Hause on the goal we conceded. Terrible!

How Wallace only came out of that game with one goal is disappointing. Good that he's getting into the positions though. Plus, there appears to be a greater willingness to shoot throughout the team. I've seen more shots in that highlight reel than I saw us have in the snore-fest v MK dons at home last season.

I quite enjoyed the game apart from the moaning bastards around me who moaned about everything even at one point calling the substitutions "Jackett like". It was never going to be pretty with that line up but when we went up a gear and moved the ball quickly in the final third some of the football was fantastic. Even with it being disjointed it was still much better than last year. Someone needs to tell out fans that last man doesn't mean automatic red card these days either as everyone round me was adamant it was a red card.
Someone needs to let the pathetic wm commentators too, who didn't stop banging on about this. They also then proceeded to constantly mention that they thought our penalty taker should be Doherty, except he wasn't on the pitch (but he actually was!)

Bloody hell Costa looks pretty rapid. Another excellent prospect by the looks of it. Great to see us create so many clear cut openings.

The goal we conceded was bloody horrific mind you.

Oh and the away kit looks awful when you see some fans wearing it in the stands. Looks like there are stewards sat in random seats for no reason. Why did we choose that horrible colour?

The 3rd chance his legs had gone, so he can be excused for the weak effort.

Few folk have mentioned James Henry from last night.......it was an odd performance. Hadn't really noticed him (apart from an air shot in the 1st half) but early in the 2nd both him and Tex went for a loose ball on the edge of the area and Tex smashed the chance high and wide. Henry then proceeded to have an argument with himself for about 2 minutes, arms going, swearing etc. Obviously he was pissed with Tex for wasting the chance but it was an odd and OTT reaction. Then a few minutes later he was out wide and telling himself to calm down! Apart from grabbing the penalty from Wallace, he didn;t speak with a team mate until near the end, which was after the Wallace chance came to him and it deflected wide and then he had a few words with Wallace.

Schizophrenia?

Yeah, after that awesome penalty against Fulham a couple of years ago that seems an excellent call.

I'm not sure Henry should be remonstrating with other people for putting long shots high and wide, that's his general MO!

There's a general consensus in the press that he was acting like a dead man walking all game

Granted I wasn't there last night but I have to say I disagree vehemently with anyone saying that Teixeira needs to cut out the flicks and tricks from his game. Let the likes of him, Costa, Wallace, Dicko and John express themselves. Who cares if they lose the ball every now and then or have the odd bad game, if they continue creating chances at the rate they are currently we'll be very hard to contain.
