Wolves 2 - 0 Derby: Verdict Thread

I thought that Derby were wary of our pace in the first half and didn't commit men forward to any great degree and as a result we struggled to get in behind them. Once we scored, they went all out for it and put us under real pressure, but it left them vulnerable to a quick break.
No one will fancy playing us, we look razor sharp going forward.

That surprises me considering the criteria both the FA and FIFA have for the clear goalscoring opportunity which the referee must consider.

The FA has "The likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball", and FIFA has "the probability of the attacker controlling the ball." and "the proximity of the player to the ball."

None of which were certain in this instance given the speed of the ball and the angle Bent was running at, so the ref had no way of being sure it was a certain clear goalscoring opportunity. If he's not certain he can't give it.

That's what I thought - bent wasn't getting there anyway, that tug wasn't enough to put him down - but in the modern game I wouldn't have been shocked at a red. I figure the ref had already blown before ince put it in.

On a separate note, all bent did all game was fall over. It was like watching a less mobile Kevin Doyle...

With regards to the "red card" incident:

The ref blew his whistle very quickly, before Ince had taken he shot, therefore no goal can be given.
Secondly, the ref saw it as a coming together rather than an intentional/professional foul therefore no card.

(not saying he was correct, just trying to work out hy the ref made his decision - I'm surprised that Batth stayed on the pitch!)

I don't think it was enough to have cost Derby the game though, there needs to be recognition of how we reduced Derby to only shots from distance.

Great win :)

For the red it seemed to me like the ref wasn't sure who had brought the Derby player down. Will be interested to watch the incident again.

Absolutely loved last night. The atmosphere was incredible, a really enjoyable game and a good real ale session afterwards. Good to meet NWW Machin and Boozad for the first time as well. Not sure about Derbys forward facing poznan though. Probably the most cringeworthy thing I've seen from a travelling support at Molineux. Loved how the south bank stayed behind to applaud Sako and Stearman off the pitch after their interview with the SKY reporters, they deserved that.

The thing I love about Kenny Jackett is how he gives his teams a clear identity and ours at the moment is rooted in our rock solid defence and speed on the break. If we go up this year it'll be on the back of Danny Batth and Richard Stearman. They are superb together. Derby had a lot of the ball in front of us and a few free kicks in dangerous areas but every time they went for the killer pass it was cut out and they were often forced to shoot from range or try an aimless cross into the box.

I'm struggling to think of a Wolves player who had a bad game. Stears, Golbourne, Macca and Dicko were the pick of the bunch though.

Stuck in Wolvo till 5 going to shake off this bitch of a hangover and then go watch our rivals take some points off each other.

Good to meet you too mate.

Is that where NWW was........hmmm

I think the referee will be disappointed that he blew his whistle so quickly. He should have waited to see how the situation panned out. But having given the free kick, then the red card should have followed. Though Batth quickly got out of the way and other Wolves players gathered around him. So maybe the referee did not know who had committed the foul.

Staggering decision by the ref really. This place would be in meltdown if that had happened to us!! That said, the situation shouldn't have happened anyway as Derby got the ball back to attack thanks to a blatant foul on Afobe.

I thought KJ got it spot on again last night. He was happy to concede possession to Derby and put 2 deep solid banks in front of Tommy. Then again when Derby stepped up their forward play he got the 2 subs spot on.

Thing is it looked like Kuszczak was going to thump the ball clear when the whistle was blown it's only because he stood on the ball and gave it to Ince that it became a goal.

Even Peter Beagrie on Sky, said after the game that no-one is going to relish coming here esp. with the support we had tonight.

Explain?

The referee awarded Derby a free kick for the foul by Batth, who was the last defender. Whether Kuszczak would have got the ball becomes irrelevant as the referee has brought the game back. The Derby player was in a position where he would have had a goal scoring opportunity, and therefore Batth should have been sent off.

Regarding Kuszczak, he does seem very reluctant to catch the ball. I wonder why that is? A couple of times he punched the ball when it seemed he could have easily caught it.

Haven't seen a replay but wasn't he going away from the goal and Stearman was close by as well. So not a clear cut chance to score (I might be using the Halsey method, which includes the following as not being a clear scoring chance - 6 yards out in front of an open goal).

Replay might prove me wrong though. Batth should have been booked and the goal should have been given.

Sorry Frank but the rules of the game disgree with you. The Derby player was only in a position where he would have had a goal scoring opportunity if he could have got to the ball first. Without being sure of that the ref can't give it.

There's also no such thing in the rules as "the last defender" as you should well know.

Absolutely brilliant night at Molineux, the crowd was immense! How did it sound on the telly because it seemed bloody noisy in the South Bank.
A very good defensive performance restricting Derby to long range efforts and we nullified them well despite their 20 minutes of keep ball after we scored. Richard Stearman really has developed into a brilliant Central defender and his partnership with Batth is really solid.
Fantastic session before and after the game and many thanks to Lycan, Boozad, WolfiePhill, Machin and NWW for the company. Onwards and upwards and bring on Forest

I watched the game on TV, and it sounded like there was a great atmosphere.

Why was Ince getting booed?
