Wolves 1 Middlesbrough 0 - Verdict thread

Excellent performance from everyone today. Neves was outstanding but Ruddy had a few crucial moments that secured the three points and for that reason probably was the motm for me. Boly deserves a mention, the man is an absolute beast and looked rock solid with and without the ball. And then there is Bright - he made a few poor choices but perhaps fewer than against Leicester. In particular there was one situation where doc was storming into the box showing for the overlap and Bright decided to dribble his way into the crowded middle instead. He did the exact same thing against Leicester! It's almost as if he doesn't trust doc with the opportunity... (surely not!). His skill on the ball is really, really special though, he was toying with their left sided players at times. A massive talent if he can start producinh some end result.

On todays showing I predict a very good season with loads of 1-0 victories.

Today was just a brilliant day. Met up with plenty of forum-ites, kids really enjoyed themselves and were impeccably well behaved and I saw a Wolves side beat a very good side whilst putting in a very promising, competent performance. A FOOTBALLING performance at that. The last game I saw was Blackburn at the end of last season. You could not see two more different displays.

With 7 out of the starting 11 making their debuts, a new head coach and vastly different style, you could excuse a bit of rustiness and unfamiliarity but we have clearly worked very hard in preseason, so much so that there wasn't a poor performance from a Wolves player and all appeared to understand their role in the team. And this is without Cav or Costa, amongst others.

Stand outs? Neves. I've a serious man crush on him. Boly was colossal in more ways than one, Douglas had a terrific tussle with Cyrus Christie all afternoon and Saiss put in his best performance thus far. But none of the starting XI played badly.

We were playing a good side today. I backed them to win the league and nothing today has convinced me otherwise. We had to defend resolutely - helped by a calm and steady presence at the back with Ruddy enjoying an excellent debut.

Assombalonga will score bags of goals this session if he stays fit. Every time I've seen him play against us he's looked very easy to play against but he gave us a torrid time today and always looked dangerous. Credit to the back 3 and Ruddy for keeping him out but they won't face many better strikers this season. So a clean sheet is a massive boost for us.

We deserved to win - 2-0 after about the 60 minute mark would have been fair but a single goal margin overall was about right. We tired by the end as Boro started to take control but no disgrace in that - we pressed and worked so hard in that opening hour. I'm sure we'll create plenty with Neves, Jota, Bright and co this season - Leo did a decent job considering he's supposed to be unfit, he's got a good touch.

Two highlights: THAT Neves pass to the right flank. Outrageous. And Jota winning the ball through sheer tenacity before dribbling past several challenges before he was fouled. He's not going to be bullied this season!

Its been a great day and there's plenty to look forward to. Obviously it's very early days but I think we can be forgiven for being a tad excited about what could happen this season. We're light years ahead of where we were 12 months ago.

Pleasure to meet your little uns mate, I'll be bringing mine to Cardiff.

Disagree with that. He might not have raw ability of our new recruits but mostly did what he was supposed to and was pulling his weight. Not among our best players today but by no means poor, and even Neves made a couple of mistakes.

I actually told thought he (Doherty) had a pretty good game

I thought Neves was fairly quiet other than his crossfield ball. It was good yeah, but Coady did a similar one today too. Let's not go too overboard!

Agree with what youre saying but think Neves will kill in the long run..we will get better

I've no doubt of that too.

Really? Okay...

(makes note to ignore anything this poster says about football in the future)

Opening Game v Boro: Verdict thread

Not sure I watched the same game as Bear & Fred.

Edit - should have meme’d this, but CBA.

He wasn't quiet by any means but he obviously attracted plenty of attention from Boro when they were defending. Which we actually dealt with well because Saiss was on his game. I was impressed by his tackling most of all, and that incredible pass

Neves was fantastic, winning balls, giving simple passes, being available on the angle and generally controlling the tempo. MOtM for me with Saiss and Douglas 2nd and 3rd respectively. Jota was class too.

All in all a very good display.

Bang on, I've no idea what they watched,

Who cares? Jesus, let others have an opinion that differs from yours. This place will (continue to) be an echo chamber if you knock everyone that has a difference in opinion. Today was a good day, lets enjoy that and take the positives. We all know that was a massive performance from the team today, AND we can all see there is more to come. Enjoy the year, has some more disagreements on here too...(and don't shut people down for them)

Having seen what Doherty has served up in past games, I think today he had a decent game and was happy with his performance.

To be honest, mate, I think the reason Johnny is picking up on those comments is because it was a good day and we should be taking the positives from it rather than being critical.

Anyway, Banjo more or less covered all my thoughts. Great day & really enjoyed catching up/meeting members of the forum before and after.

In terms of the team, Neves & Jota will grab the headlines over the season from our signings, but big John Ruddy today has added two extra points on to our tally with his excellent save when Britt was clean through. Ruddy & Douglas are absolute steals for £1m between them, and we have a lot to be thankful for having that pair on board.

Miranda was a tad ropey. There's no doubt he will enjoy the physical battle of the Championship, and it's a bonus that he's good on the floor. He'll get better with more games. I thought he grew in to the match as it went on, and he seemed to be enjoying the battle with Asombalonga, but was deservedly booked for 2-3 crude tackles. Coady did well today, but he's lost the flight of the ball twice in two matches now (once letting Vardy in v Leicester and again today), which we were lucky to get away with. Playing in that role, he's basically the last man, so if he misjudges something, it invariably means they're clean through on Ruddy. I'm pleased for him, and I'm comfortable with him being in that role - but he needs to cut the positional mistakes out. Boly was fantastic. He's fast becoming my favourite player. Absolute brick wall. Misjudged one ball but got away with it with a bicycle kick clearance. Generally though, I have no fear what so ever that he'll love the Championship. Douglas is a great signing. He just suits that role to a tee. The one time he was caught out of position, he legged it back 20 yards and put in a perfectly timed slide tackle to prevent a cross. He'll be a massive player for us this season. Doherty on the other hand, you'd imagine will make way to German Phil once he's fit. Doherty found himself in acres of space on a few occasions today, and just didn't seem to know what to do with it.

In midfield, there isn't much more that I can say about Neves that hasn't already been said. He seems to find a couple of yards of space wherever he is. Some of his passing, I have never seen a player with that ability in a Wolves shirt before. Spraying passes each and every way to the feet of other players. He put three challenges in towards the end which proves he's up for the battle and doesn't mind mucking in too. Quality home league debut. Jota, on the other had, wasn't really in the match for 60 odd minutes - then he wins the ball by the corner flag, and ghosts up to the half way line before being taken out. The best bit is, he probably has another 2-3 gears to go up from today - and I can't wait to see this happen. Bright is very good with the ball at his feet, and he's being asked to play a role that probably doesn't suit him - but I thought he did well today. He has a tendency to overplay it, and when he has time to think about it, he panics. He needs a goal and hopefully that will give him the confidence to kick on. Shame when he worked some space for himself that he did some weird sidefoot with his right foot rather then lashing it in with his left foot.

Leo did well. A good, solid debut. He took his goal really well (although it was served on a plate for him), and I'm pleased that it will give him a boost moving forward. Considering he's been at the club under a week, I think that's a really impressive debut for him. He didn't seem to strong in the air, but hopefully with the way we play, he won't need to be.

Overall, very pleasing performance and today was always going to be a marker of where we are and how well we can compete in this division. I'd say the signs are pretty positive.

I thought Bonatini was OK in the air (won a couple in front of me second half) but I was impressed with his control and link up play, which seems to be exactly what Nuno was after. He did a lovely little run over the ball dummy where Neves called for him to do it. He seems like he will only get better with more games, which is promising!

I think Miranda would be better as the central defender, which I would think is the plan longer term and especially when Hause gets fit. I think I agree with what most have said about Coady and he is helping a lot with this transition but we will only get so much out of him in that role I think. Mind you, he looks so much better there than at right back or centre midfield.
