Wolves 0-1 Villa: Verdict Thread

He is central striker. He has no goals. That’s about it in a nutshell. Saiss has more goals than him
completely irrelevant given game time and age. not sure why this is a remotely valid argument.

he has 232 minutes in PL time, mostly end of game sub. saiss has 5 goals since being promoted, hardly a barn burner. I would expect any starting CB/CDM to score a handful over several seasons from corners or what have you.

It's again holding silva to a completely different standard to the rest of the team. Do you seriously watch him play and think, "well he isn't gonna get any better, our other forwards are being much more productive"?? It makes no sense. As I said he's not "perfectly ready", but he's what we have.

Aye, but Fabio has a much higher ceiling, surely.

Not having a go at anyone but seasons/transfer windows don't exist in isolation, if we think our guy might be leading the line for Portugal when Ronaldo finishes then we're better off with him than someone who looks ok at this level but not much more than that, and was still far too expensive for what he is.
I think it's two different situations. Fabio will be the smartest or most ridiculous transfer move the club has ever made relative to value, difficult to see it falling between the two given the cost. That doesn't mean though that a Raul injury should thrust him forward like this. Realistically he has to play and that puts pressure on him i don't think he needs. How many other PL clubs are one injury away from banking on an 18 year old?

So we're trying to blood in Doc and Jonny replacements, a new formation/approach, and Fabio's fledgling developmental steps to boot. All during a pandemic and after one of the most physically demanding season transitions ever.

That's a lot to deal with, and not all of it was out of our hands.

I’ve got more question marks over the Semedo fee.

The Silva fee is ridiculous. It’s not that he might come good, he has to. Ignoring inflation he’s got to become 10-15 goal a season striker to break even. And given you are signing him sub peak, then he should be increasing his value, not merely becoming an Ollie Watkins, Chris Wood etc. Would that not be considered failure?

As for Semedo. A fee rising above £30m for an unwanted by his former club, suspect defensively full back with minimal resale value (in his 30s when his contract ends). Wan-Bissaka and Chillwell have gone for £50m and that includes - English tax, much younger, best players for their club, and from what I’ve seen so far much better ability wise at a younger age.

Not meant as a huge dig, but most of the board were spaffing when we signed both of them.

I didn’t get excited about Silva. I openly questioned it.

I got excited about Semedo (albeit with limited knowledge) but got sucked into the fact he must be a world beater if he’d played so many times for Barca.

People getting excited about Vitinha/Silva/Esteves was just stupid. There’s no evidence to go off, literally can’t have seen them play for any sort of sustained period, and the one we didn’t sign isn’t even a regular for Reading...

It’s really easy to search on the new forum for a keyword and posts by a member. Worth keeping in mind.

Honestly, whilst we were all apparently pleased with our window, hindsight and form begs to differ, We seem to have spunked the budget yet gone backwards.

But I reiterate. You can't have a small squad and invest millions on potential without having proper back up in each position

Its completely pointless keep saying Silva isn't ready or he's too lightweight...he's all we've got, don't want Traore up the middle, don't think Neto's suited to that role and I really don't want to see Podence as a false 9 in the near future

Podence played really well with Raul when we briefly went with it. He can do the job but both he and Neto are better in the inside channels with a player central to link them.

Podence kicking off on Insta.

Posting clips of his foul on Mings vs the Traore non penalty and the no contact second yellow for Moutinho.

Don't think it was a pen on Adama.

But atrocious calls on both the Mings "foul" and the Ramsey dive (that's exactly what it was).

as I said in the matchday thread, it's unbelievable how little attention the mou red card dive received. the commentators went on and on about "contact" during one of the first half corners that "should" have been given as a pen against us, but that was obviously more important

can only chalk it up to being end of game and already having a narrative to blather about

More VAR red tape stops it too - like the red card appeals process VAR isn't allowed to review second yellows unless its to upgrade the second yellow to a straight red. Im surprised BT didn't wheel professional Stockley Park sychophant Paul Walton out to remind the audience of that rather than pretend nothing controversial happened and the DVB was indeed a DVB.

The more I watch it, the more I fail to understand how Dean thinks Podence has fouled Mings. How does that even make any sense?

A week ago I was feeling down because we sucked for a lot of the game (and lost 4-0). Today I am not upset at all. We definitely did not deserve to lose, by and large contained Villa and Grealish well, and had by far the better chances. If there was going to be a winner it should have been us. Ok we did lose, but that's life.
Semedo is much better going forward than defending, but I thought he had a reasonable game other than the penalty. In fact all through the game I thought Grealish was going to cut in from the left and manufacture a penalty but Semedo did a decent job of preventing that. Oh the irony.
Three fast forwards plus a target man sounds great but is not working properly. Silva's youth and the Adama conundrum are hampering us. What we need in Raul's absence is what we cannot have because of Raul's absence - two big men up front. Everton, with Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, pose more threat than we manage. Donk arriving late is not the answer.
What we need, and what we have, are two very different things. I certainly don't know what we should do, but I suspect that Nuno will drop Adama and switch to 3 at the back for Chelsea.

Think people are definitely over reacting (that’s fine, we just lost at home to villa in frustrating circumstances) but I can’t understand the soul searching.

i was far more concerned about some of the early performances where we really looked like we couldn’t create much at all, and were leaking too many chances. Bar last weekend, we’ve been pretty good at that since the Fulham game in general. We don’t need to panic, even with the tough fixtures coming up. We aren’t in danger of going down and the middle of the table is congested.

I couldn’t help but be extremely encouraged by silva (he is 18 btw) performances against arsenal and Villa. He presses very, very well, and gets in pretty decent positions in the box already.

Semedo fucked up at the end of the game yesterday I get it, but again I’m not seeing where all the hate is coming at his general performance

Because you're not getting his name right it's 30 million pounds Semedo, a price he obviously asked for and now is having to justify ;)

I assume he is one of the highest earners at the club too. I imagine he did have a say in that and absolutely does need to start to justify that wage....sharpish.

Being ‘ok’ but still getting done in the 90th minute before giving a penalty away is the high water mark of his Wolves career so far. I’m not sure how anyone can be anything but disappointed and more than a little concerned about him.
