Wolves 0-1 Villa: Verdict Thread

of course it isnt a good thing. You develop an understanding with the players you play with and learn how they think

I’m confused by those who think we were shit today. I thought we had to grow into each half but when we took control we were the team who created the best chances, and that unfortunately is what was our problem today. We need to create chances where it isn’t Donck, for all his great running, to be the one on the end of it. Thought Fabio was very unlucky with his effort.

just before the penalty I honestly was thinking to myself that Semedo had done pretty well against Grealish, with some support of Dendoncker and Coady. But it’s a terrible thing to do at that stage of the game. I don’t agree with those saying he is Sunday league etc but we do need some more consistency from him. In possession he allows us to stay on the ball for longer as he is good under pressure from opponents, and he combines wel with others. We just haven’t had a 90 minute performance from him, which is why I understand concerns around him.
this post is like a breath of fresh air on this thread

"We just have to accept that this will be a transition season." People say that all the time, as thought there is some automatic certainty that we will bounce back in 21/22. You simply cannot assume that. Players leave/get injured/get older. Absolutely no guarantee of being a top 7 team again in 21/22

I'm pretty tired of "chance creation" discussion.

we don't score goals. we weren't particularly prolific even before our top 3 goal scorers weren't in the squad. I don't care how many chances get created if we aren't winning games. there isn't a chance creation table. we have 11 goals in 12 games and are in 12th place, and that's with everyone else having a game in hand.

especially when people say things like, "any other game donks chance would've gone in". no, no it wouldn't have. because he doesn't score.

Just want us to get a striker that score goals in, even just on a loan deal..if that offends people, fine..
That is what we all want . I don't know any 37 or 39 year old strikers who have ever done that at the highest level in my lifetime.

Semedo has an error in him every game. His error today cost us. 30 m defenders should be able to defend without errors most games. Silva huffed and puffed and competed today. But 35 m centre forwards are judged in goals. He has none. I keep saying it but Traore is a passenger with the current personnel as he is crossing for eitherpodece or Silva who won't win much in there. Dendonker Huff's and puffs but isn't finishing. Our set pieces are woeful! Creatively sterile and overly complicated. And, half the first team are out of form. . It is fine margins as Silva , with ball at feet hit the inside of the post. An inch the other way and it's 1 0 . Again though ,Traore showed he doesn't have an instinctive football brain when he shoots when we are 4 on 3 and others better placed. It is only acceptable if he scores.

People will say it's a bad day at the office but we keep having them. It is more than just we need a bit of luck.

The alternative is to play the same players all the time until they retire.

It's obvious there is a transition occuring now, we've changed our formation of 3 years and learning how to play with a different style / mentality.

We need to evolve, if we don't and we have no succession plan then as soon as the nucleus ages we start to plummet.

It's not great where we are right now, but at least it shows a bit of ambition and thinking about the future.

If it cocks up then it shows a sprinkling of hubris too. I don't fancy plummeting before the nucleus has aged!

The logic of evolving is sound, I think it's fair to question the timing and extent of it.

Ok you've sold me.

I have to say I don't think it's the answer but if he comes here and score 10 in the next 25 then I will eat humble pie! 😁

I only saw the first half, had to go out. Thought Villa started the better without really troubling us, we looked ok on the break. Last 10 minutes thought we started to get a bit of control and created a few chances.
Can't really comment on the second half but it seems we were unlucky....saw the Podence 'foul' on Mings just before the pen.....wtf?
Talking to people I trust, they thought Silva did quite well overall, pity he didn't score. Whether he's too light weight or not, he's our only option up front imo and simply has to start atm.
We do look disjointed a bit and I suppose thats to be expected when we're trying to change style, just going to have to trust Nuno and give him time.

Oh I agree the execution doesn't look great right now but it might take time. I think we're a quality midfielder and striker between Raul and Silva short right now.

I'm hopeful we actually after Renato Sanches in Jan along with a forward.

I'd want a quality CB next summer too.

Deeply frustrating, we just are lacking for a pattern of play right now, I don't think we've worked out what it is that we want to do. Of course we shouldn't be losing that game on the balance of chances at either end but it's very easy to leave yourself in that position when you don't have enough goals on the pitch.

I mean, there's stuff to be positive about. Saiss was good on his return, Marçal has impressed in pretty much every game he's played, Moutinho is over that mini-dip he had, Podence and Neto always look bright, that's the most promise we've seen out of Fabio to date, his movement is good and you can't seriously be critical about the shot off the post, how it doesn't either go in off the inside of the upright OR come straight back out into the middle of goal I don't know.

But overall we're clearly short of our best, we aren't imposing ourselves on games, we aren't looking as dangerous on the counter as we did previously, we do allow the opposition to play too much (possession isn't everything of course and I don't really want us knocking the ball around in a sterile Hoddle-esque fashion) and we're in a difficult run of fixtures now - on paper at least, anyway.

There'll be no danger at all of relegation as three of the bottom four are absolutely shit and Sheff Utd are very unlikely to come back from THAT start. So no hyperbole required there. However we could do with some more cohesion and above all some more bloody goals.

Like other supporters say all teams must evolve or go backwards to do this however you must have the players to change the system. In my opinion we don't have these players so would be better off staying with 3 at the back and gradually bringing in different players either from the academy or new signings [but you cannot just keep throwing money at the problem]. Does this side after the last transfer window look a better team I think not.

I think we all expect it to take time, but a dozen games is long enough for a fair assessment of how the initial stages have gone, I feel?

I think I understand what Nuno is trying to get us to do, I'm not sure it needed to be done this season, or that we have the personnel to make it a roaring success any time soon, and right now the previous transfer window looks an odd one.

It's a tight league bar the bottom five, I feel we're in a fair position based on our performances, but our remaining December fixtures are very concerning, especially if our unconvincing and uninspired form continues. Need a spark from one or two of our stars

Another thought that's popped into my head is around controlling games. When we were at our best I felt we controlled games both when we had the ball and when we didn't. When defending it always felt like we almost decided how the opposition could attack us, I just don't think we control games the way we used to.

Not really digging out Adama as he was ok today (bar that time he ignored Fabio one side, Podence the other and hit a shite shot straight at Emi) but it's now NINETEEN league games without a goal or assist, and almost an entire calendar year without a league goal.

He absolutely has to do more, as do the other forwards in fairness.

Suck it in, pay what every it takes to get Tammy Abraham and tell him and the rest that if he’s fit he’s playing.
Knows where the goal is and doubt if he is 100% happy at Chelsea at the moment.
We’re Treading water at the moment and going no where. We need an spark, end of

We're far from a relegation team, but there should be difficult questions asked if we were to finish (I know it's some way off!) much lower than where we are now.

That'd essentially mean finishing below Villa, Newcastle, Palace and Leeds and conceding the 'best of the rest' battle to Soton/Everton/WHU

I can't remember how many games we've started with a back four but we started the season with 3 ATB.

I agree it hasn't been great but there are green shoots here and there. Semedo looks more like a WB than a FB as does Ait-Nouri so it doesn't feel joined up right now.

We've been lucky with the form of our players up until now, this season it feels like Boly and Neves haven't been at their best. It also feels like we haven't had any decent luck for ages
