Wolves 0-1 Liverpool: Verdict Thread

No I know. I’m just playing devils advocate.

There isn’t a club I know who gets 100% of deals right though, is there.

We’ve had some exceptional business to get us to a certain level and then some shoddy ones.

Unfortunately for us the shoddy ones have all happened around the same period.
To actively spend that amount of money to make your side weaker is inexcusable.

Most things aren't black and white but this is.

Seems a strange game to throw that at Adama. I thought he won countless fouls and played pretty well today, ironically
Carey, what I was saying was that he was brilliant running with the ball, as always, and won loads of fouls, but when he doesn't have the ball his ideabof pressing is equivalent to a stroll in the park. I watched him and I am not sure I saw him tackle anyone all game.
His speed is phenomenal but he doesn't use it chasing back or tracking players across the field.

The shoddy ones have been two or our three biggest ever fees. The other one of those was Raul who had proved himself. To get two such big ones wrong is always going to leave you short.
That's an interesting one, I've looked up our Top 10 transfers
Silva (miss) - some will argue it's too early to judge this. Not for me at least from a value perspective
Raul (hit)
Semedo (miss) - based on value
Jonny (hit), only question would be the injuries and if he comes back from them but we couldn't predict that
Traore (hit) based on value
Podence (tbc - the talent is there, but injuries and inconsistency mean I can't really judge)
Cutrone (miss)
Patricio (hit)
Neves (hit)
Neto (hit) with the same injury caveat as Jonny.
The next 10 are all also under Fosun
Jota, Donck, Costa, Hoever, Donck, Jordao, Sa, Boly, RAN, Adobe (to be flipped). There's only a couple of those I'd question on value.

So their record / Mendes' is actually very good 70-75% but as you say of the 5 clear misses (imo) 2 are in the top 3

We should have money to spend, only Covid made us post a loss since we came up, and that loss should be wiped out in the following year's accounts (plus the new NBC deal more or less sorts everyone out). Our net transfer spend has hovered around £0 for quite a long time now.

I can't fault the effort yesterday, the players gave everything. We're miles off going toe to toe with a team like that though, especially with numerous first team players missing.

Just a good thing that we have the points on the board already so we don't have to worry too much if/when we do lose more often than not this month. The way we've performed lately (on the whole, Everton/West Ham aside) isn't particularly sustainable but until we get some proper new players in, we don't know where we can go under Lage.

The fans who booed Jota are cunts and fuck me, was it cold yesterday. Trains were a shambles all day too, everything delayed, no proper capacity anywhere.

Sadly every club has morons and we are no different. Thankfully the vast majority let Jota know what we think of him when he went off.

Yeah booing Jota was idiotic made us look like Villa. Sad

I also agree that our results can't continue to pay dividends way above our performance levels.

Thank god we notched a few points in quite poor performances.

But we need to score and it ain't happening with this defensive system with no real link to attack. We got two teams a back 7 with clear plan and instruction and a front 3 without. We are so slow and predictable its painful to watch. We take a throwing in their half and 5 passes later they are pressing our defenders on our 6 yd line. Not just yesterday all the time.

Quote from RAWK made me laugh
"What you get for purposely wasting time from 10 seconds onwards. Portuguese fuckin Burnley. An the ref, great game in midfield for them I thought, he was everywhere"
Does anyone seriously think the ref was on our side I thought they got everything.
They are all agreed we are time wasting wankers lol and the ref gave us everything

We do waste time and we do it very badly.

The ref was shite for both teams I thought, the linesman was worse as noted earlier in the thread. Stop flagging marginal offsides, you're not supposed to.

There’s a couple of delightful lads in earshot to me that spewed vile vitriol towards Jota. In fact they get worked up towards any away player that comes nearby for corners/throw-ins ect. I really can’t see how people can get that worked up, unless it’s a player that we all unilaterally hate.

Probably didn’t shithouse very well with our time wasting, but to be honest I can’t recall too much! Three or four went down with clear injuries, Coady, RAN and Sa and we got the ball back in play from throwing ins and goal kicks reasonably quickly, certainly not at Burnley levels where the ref added 3 mins in the first half and 5 mins in the second, which was about right.
This wasn’t the reason we lost or Liverpool won

Spot on, for time wasting we're no worse than any other team (barring Liverpool, City, Chelsea) and better than a few. Liverpool are just shitloads better than us.

I don't like to see it regardless and as I say, we're shit at it anyway.

You could argue it's now cost us three goals this season, Leeds and Liverpool where a lot of injury time has been played (and we caused a fair bit of that ourselves) and Sa faking injury vs Newcastle when there was bugger all wrong with him.

As we've only conceded 13 overall, I'd say we end up on the negative side of the equation through being dickheads, plus I don't want my team to behave like that.

I agree it's a horrible tactic, I hate it but as I said earlier we aren't that bad for it. It seems to me we have done it more since the Brentford game, we were poor in that game but there's no doubt in my mind that their timewasting/shithousing was part of the reason we couldn't really get going after their second goal.
I suspect most teams think they have no choice but to employ it or they will be impacted negatively if they don't use it.

Meh it’s no big deal either way. Think the ref is adding 4 regardless, so he added an extra minute.

Wasting time at FKs, GKs and throw in’s does work, they never add it on or certainly not to the extent you do it. But the lying down injured when your getting subbed is a complete waste of time, they literally do add it on then, unless your the twat in the Brentford game.

The sooner the 60 min match and independent timer happens the better.

I'd keep the game at 90 but put a shot clock on free kicks and throw ins as they do in other sports. Go over the clock and you lose the ball to the other team (throw ins reversed, free kicks become drop balls, goal kicks become corners).

And any player that goes down the clock is automatically stopped. No added time, just stopped. Same for subs.

I quite like that. I thought the 60 min idea was a good one but was uncomfortable in the idea of such a drastic change in terms of how the stats, history of the sport then aligns, so keeping it at 90 with other tweaks would be welcome. In Futsal it's 4 seconds from being in possession of the ball isn't it. I know that wouldn't work as teams would do that thing where a player comes to take the throw from the other side of the pitch, but a timer starting from when the ball is considered 'at the spot or in possession' could work.

The ref just needs another watch with a stopwatch on it. He starts it when he thinks a team is wasting time, and stops it when the game gets underway again.

This also keeps track of subs, injuries etc.

Then he checks the total at the end of the half, rounds up/down as needed and signals to add it on.

It doesn’t work though. He can’t just start is clock for 5 seconds every time the ball goes out of play. Let’s say a normal GK takes 25 seconds from when the ball goes out to when it’s restarted. The ref can’t decide at which point they have “taken the piss” everytime. Especially when ball boys and the crowd are complicit with the time wasting.

I would like to see 30 minute halfs with the clock stopped when out of play trialed. Yes the 45minute half is traditional, but plenty of other things have changed over the years.
