Winter Improvement Thread (aka Winter Squad Weakening Thread and TWF Suicide Watch)

Good news, im glad we dont have saunders, at least something good.

Williamson agreed to sign, 18 month deal if sky are to be believed.

A defender was a must in this window and Williamson has proved he can shore up the defence and hold it together. We can maybe move the midfield a bit further away from the back 4 now.

Excellent news if true.

Not at all, but whether it's that he won't ever be fully fit, won't sign a contract or has had a fallout, who wouldn't play him over Doherty? I think the latter has been ok at left back (better than on the other side) and good at Charlton. Unless Kenny is really Pulis lite with all the defence needing to be 6ft 2 or taller then you'd play him wouldn't you?

Doherty has been awful at left back. I wont give you a stat of how many goals we've shipped from his side since he's returned to the side, I'm sure Deutsch will be along with that one soon. Look at the mess Craig Noone made of our left side. How do you let a left footed right winger like Noone waltz inside onto his favoured foot with impunity the way Doherty did and keep your place the next week?

Golbourne's injury and his quite frankly dreadful form in 2015 may be the reason he wont get a new contract here but every time he's been dropped it's because he's been out fought at the back post the week before.

Hope this one comes off - more important than anything we do further forward in my eyes (& I don't think that he's that fantastic, but has already shown us he is better than what we have and can organise)

Really hope the Williamson deal is true. He is a talker and an organiser. We badly miss those two in the entire 11.

Still hoping the Mason deal somehow falls through though.

Satisfied rather than bowled over with the Williamson deal. He'll be fine for us for 18 months at this level and we know he fits in so once the terms were lashed out it's a sensible move.

If we get Mason and sign a proper left back then I'll be at least placated by the window, albeit I still think it was a big mistake to sell Afobe in the middle of a season.

Oh and Doherty has been terrible at left back. He was disgustingly poor vs Reading and Cardiff especially.

18 months is what we need as a deal as well, nothing more than that for a player his age. The new Craddock.

Squad looks like it's shaping up to this for the rest of the season...

Martinez (when fit)
Iorfa - Batth - Williamson - Doherty
RVLP - Coady - McDonald - Henry
Mason - Siggy

(...or maybe Saville in there instead of Siggy and RVLP as the "pacy" forward alongside Mason? Official site seems to claim RVLP is a "forward" now, not a winger.)

Please, not the left hand side of doom! We can't send that out for the rest of the season.

---------------------------Martinez-----------------------

Iorfa--------------Batth--------Williamson--------New LB (please)

-------------Saville------Price--------McDonald------------

------------VLP----------Mason-------Zyro (Byrne until he is fit)

Think the Williamson signing is a good one and is needed, as mentioned he's a talker and will organise. The contract length is about right too. I really don't get the Mason one though, i've seen enough of him at Cardiff to think he's not worth anywhere near £3 million and there are definitely better options out there for that money. Will give him a chance though as he is a decent footballer and could fit in well here.

According to some on the Mix Mason is dithering over a move here. Not sure whether there is a link to an article on that.
