Winter Improvement Thread (aka Winter Squad Weakening Thread and TWF Suicide Watch)

I try to stay levelheaded but if Byrne goes out on loan (especially to another Champ side) I will lose my shit

Can I ask why there's such hysteria around rumours?

I appreciate its pretty shit currently, but it's reactionary crap to every rumour heard in silly season.

Let's just hang in before we simultaneously rip the powers that be to shreds for something that we don't know will happen?

We all know how easy it is to get a rumour "believed"!

The bottom 5 are all averaging less than a point a game, so 10 more points will in all likelihood keep us up, even with the current squad that won't be a problem from 18 games. It's clear to me that this season has been written off, if we can get someone in at the right price then we will, but we aren't going to over pay over the odds and it's debatable if we are going to pay the going rate. We certainly aren't going to be signing players (other than on loan) just to fill the squad. McAnthony at Peterborough said that Jez had called him about Washington, but hadn't heard from him again after he quoted him a price, so we aren't paying £2.5m for a League One forward.

In principle I don't have a problem with this if there is a sizeable pot to invest with in the Summer, unfortunately I don't have that faith.

I'd be inclined to bring someone in on loan for the rest of the season to play up top and then build the team around dicko next year. No point paying ridiculous money for average players just because it's January.

Then again, I dont trust Kenny and Thelwell with any of the afobe money so would rather it's withheld until at least jackett is gone.

We need another 12 pts to reach the magical figure of 50pts which as always been deemed as 'safe'.

I reckon we should do that comfortably with what we are left with, might as well leave it until the end of he season now when we could have a new owner and a new manager.

And even if there is a sizable pot, not much point if it's wasted on players we either don't play or loan out...

I think it is going to be a while longer than that before we see a new owner. With the number of clubs on the market, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see a new owner for another five years. I definitely can't see next season offering any more than this one.

The Wolves Facebook page is the friend which keeps giving for transfer suggestions, personal best so far is Nigel Reo-Coker.

I certainly won't be surprised if we don't sign anyone of significance before the window shuts, I agree we should be safe this season. If anyone on loan comes who's an improvement on what we got, for a possible transfer in summer fair enough. Would of liked a striker to replace Afobe but maybe Siggy, Collins and Enobakhare will be given a chance. Looks like we won't be paying competitive wages anyway from the E&S latest scoop.

Music to Moxey's ears. You should never stand still in football. We should be bedding in several decent players now, so they are ready for next season. Also, I think it's a piss take to season ticket holders and the paying public, to keep playing a weakened team, when they have already paid hard earned money to see Wolves.

WOLVES CLOSE TO MASON DEAL

Sky sources understand Wolves are close to completing a deal to sign Cardiff striker Joe Mason in a £3m deal.

Agreed. But it happens every transfer window - the hysteria is worse at the moment because we're in a worse state on and off the pitch, the squad is weaker than a Kevin McDonald tackle and we're basically really shit and need new players.

I'm totally on board with not spending much now and waiting til summer, when BIG changes are needed. I've no qualms about us filling the gaps in the squad with loans to increase the numbers, ideally with players who might be available to sign permanently should they impress.

That said our best two signings under KJ, Dicko & Afobe, were made in the window and good prices. It is possible to get good value players in January

I'd rather wait until the summer than spaff £3m on Joe Mason.

I think that Wolves have been put off by players wage demands. Paying transfer fees is one thing, going above our wage ceiling is something else.

All depends on whether your ceiling is realistic, practical and fit for purpose though doesn't it?

I would say ours would be fit for a team happy to bounce between 10th & 14th in the Championship
