Winter Improvement Thread (aka Winter Squad Weakening Thread and TWF Suicide Watch)

I make it 142 championship games and 34 goals. Didn't even look impressive against us. That is emphatically not a £3m player

Agreed. But it happens every transfer window - the hysteria is worse at the moment because we're in a worse state on and off the pitch, the squad is weaker than a Kevin McDonald tackle and we're basically really $#@! and need new players.

I'm totally on board with not spending much now and waiting til summer, when BIG changes are needed. I've no qualms about us filling the gaps in the squad with loans to increase the numbers, ideally with players who might be available to sign permanently should they impress.

If they don't buy now, what makes you believe they will spend in the summer?

I don't think they'll sit on night on £10m (or whatever) and not spend a decent amount of it. The biggest concern for me isn't 'will we spend it', but 'who will we spend it on'. Because our record in the transfer market recently is godawful - the summer is the right time to readdress, re-evaluate, clear the decks and start again. Sorting out the recruitment policies is one of the most urgent priorities IMO. We really need to readdress the market and our approach to it because it looks very much like we're being TOO cautious, and those we do bring in don't get the chance to prove themselves.

Some people seem to be in some huge rush to spend as much as we can as quickly as possible and that's asking for trouble. I would rather we didn't do that - it's not like we're likely to make the play offs so the urgency really isn't that great.

£3m on Mason? Surely we can get a better striker cheaper than that?

I'd rather we loaned one in TBH to see us through the rest of the season until Dicko is back. It is highly unlikely we will go down or make the play offs so I'd rather we spent the Afobe money in the summer. Depressingly, I don't trust us to spend the money wisely now or in the summer. Nor do I trust the manager to utilise anybody that we do bring in.

Odd phrasing, especially given they don't normally talk about fees:

Wolves can confirm they are in advanced discussions with Cardiff City after making a significant bid for striker Joe Mason.

Trying to push back against the people saying money is being taken out?

His record hardly reads for that of a significant signing..

Forgive me for not getting excited about a striker who's scored one goal in nearly four months.

I don't see where he fits in at all.

Totally unenthused by this. Replacing Afobe is nigh on impossible but there must be strikers out there with a better pedigree than this.

I also admit i dont know alot about him outside of his wiki stats, if he wont bring goals to the team what will he be bringing? For £3m i want a shite sight more than works hard.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's a decent enough player but he's no Afobe replacement. Totally different kind of player and isn't going to get anywhere near as many goals.

It's pricey if that £3m figure is accurate.

He's rubbish and if we spend anywhere near £3million on him the whole recruitment team should be sacked on the spot. Wikipedia says he's five foot ten, hope he's got good neck muscles as he watches the ball repeatedly sail over the top of his head (as no doubt we're signing him as a number 10).

I am pleased we are bringing a striker in but it just seems a strange way of spending £3m. Baffling that we would spend that much on him.

Also, if the 3m fee is accurate youd have to say thats going to be the lionshare of any budget, is that a suggestion Jackett is content with the defence?

Id have tried for say Dack for 1.5m and then have a decent amount to attract a good CH/LB. I just cant see us spending much more if anything here on out.

Has a far worse record in League 1 than Conor Washington. But Kenny seems to have had a hard-on for Mason for about a year.

Could it be though that given the 'loss' of Edwards KJ is going to utilise a front 2 which would suit ALF who we acknowledge had a decent record at this level prior to joining us and being used in a formation totally unsuited to him

I would rather us throw the kids in, which in itself is an investment and then look again in the summer, honestly.

Controversial view perhaps, but recruitment wise right now we simply have not a clue if Joe Mason is the best they can come up with. Do not even get me started on the reported fee.

+1,000,000 The reported fee for a striker with one goal since October is fucking ridiculous
