UEFA Nations League & Euro 2020 Qualification

94 was a great wc apart from the final.

Serginho-maldini-nesta-cafu my fave backline all time, im a huge nesta fan and I dont like staam at all. Maldini greatest defender and cafu greatest rb all time imo. Serginho was hugely underrated too, im pretty sure he had a season with almost 20 goals
The most Serginho managed in one season was 5, but who's counting?

Yeah 94 was class. I was in Russia, it was boiling hot and Ireland beat Italy. I couldn't believe it.

Poor showing from Ireland tonight though, surprising no-one.
Passing was poor,.couldn't control a single ball and literally looked like 11 lads who had never met each other were thrown onto a football pitch.
Once the Swiss scored we woke up, Whelan hit the crossbar with an absolute rocket and 17 seconds later a cross from deep saw McGoldrick get his first for Ireland.

Massive point but a very lacklustre performance, DW nailed it - we looked like Wolves on a bad day under Mick.

1982 was the greatest World Cup. As a 9 year old it was something bigger than football it became who you were in the playground...Zico, Falcao, Socrates, Rumminigge, Platini, Boniek, Rossi, Tigana, Mariner [emoji2]. I was Eder

Serginho was shit man :icon_lol:

Wasn't even a proper left back.

Was he actually shit or just looked that way relative to the absolute Gods he played with at Milan?

1982 was a great world cup, with Italy and Rossi winning against West Germany 3-1. But you would not have seen the 1958 world cup in Sweden when Pele and Didi ran the show for Brazil and Brazil beat Sweden 5-2. That had some fantastic football. I think Fontaine (France) still holds the record for the most goals scored in a single game. 1954 was also good because that showed off the great Hungarian team of Puskas, Groszics (goalie) etc who played magnificently throughout the tournament then threw it away in the final when West Germany got a late winner through Helmut Rahn to win 3-2. So each of 1954, 1958 and 1982 were fantastic tournaments and the most pathetic by far was 2010.

I mostly remember it being Kaladze at left back in that sort of era Milan side.

Definitely Maldini when they beat Steaua 4-0 in the European cup final.

We're probably talking opposite ends of Maldini's career, I was referring to the memory of him and Nesta flanked by Cafu and Serginho.

Serginho was similiar to troare, a natural winger, super fast and flashy and he was a great crosser too. Definately not shit, not the best defensively, he played for brasil too but had roberto carlos in front of him his whole career otherwise he would have been brazils #1 choice his whole career. Superb player, not as good as cafu obviously but cafu is the best right back that has ever lived

I always thought that maldini-nesta-staam-cafu was overkill defensively, give the poor opposition fuckers a chance atleast

Phillip Lahm was better than Cafu, less flashy but a far better defender and a really good footballer.

Brazil 1970...end of, never been anything like them since and never will be.

they didnt win anything but 1974-78 Holland were great to watch. Something silky and different. As a 10 year old it was great to watch how they tried to play the game.

1990 - my first. Saw most games, watched the Goals video thousands of times
1994- missed huge chunks of it, I was only 13, staying up until 1am wasn't on
1998 - class, back from school just in time for the first game, on for the evenings
2002 - back from Germany, essentially had fuck all to do for a month so just watched it despite the weird times
2006 - decent, finish work at 5, saw most of the games
2010 - worst World Cup ever, even if I saw the games I wish I hadn't. Urgh
2014 - all evenings. Cool
2018 - work from home. No issue

1974- Holland and sweden were the teams after England had messed up qualification against the poles.
1978 -Scotland and Alan Roughs perm!
1982- Robsons first minute goal
1986- Maradona.
1990- Penalties ffs!

after then I wasnt so keen and after 1998 and beckham getting sent off I wasnt such a zealot. This century its been generally meh.

Agreed, it's how the game should be taught before players know what position they are.

If you're under 12-14 how do you know you're a defensive midfielder?

Holland were absolutely the best team in 74, but the only team not to lose a game at that tournament was ..........

Scotland

I can just about remember 1978. I was very young. Blurry recollections. My dad got me out of bed to watch the final.

1982 I can remember pretty well. It was a great tournament, and the Brazil v Italy game is one of my favourites I have ever watched.
