UEFA Nations League & Euro 2020 Qualification

Lahm for sure, maldini although hes not really a lb, but im stuggling to be honest. Every great lb I can think of played ages ago

Lahm hardly ever played at LB after about 2009. Maldini retired in 2009 (and was exclusively a CH for pretty much the last decade of his career).

It's Cole, he was genuinely world class. Far more so than Beckham, Gerrard, Rooney or post-2001 Owen.

Maldini was a CH when Cole was playing and didn't Germany play Lahm on the right?

Lahm was LB at the 2006 World Cup. They always wanted him on the right if possible though as he was better there. He did get shifted back over sometimes as the likes of Marcell Jansen were shite.

The majority of his Bayern/Germany appearances would not be at LB. Löw liked to play him in central midfield as well.

Roberto Carlos would be the only left back competition for Ashley Cole that I can think of.

Bobby C was done by about 2005/6.

After 2007 his club career was in Turkey, Brazil, Russia and India, we aren't hitting the heights here.

My interest levels in England are fairly low, but just seen we are playing Bulgaria on Saturday #trashtalking

Actually Bulgaria cost me money in the last round of games as I backed them to beat Kosovo (not even officially a country) and they were the only ones to let me down in a 10 teamer. So I'm in for this.

To be fair, neither is Gibraltar and they are in these qualifiers.

Not that you would ever bet on them winning a game at the moment unless you really didn't like money.

Good point about Roberto Carlos being done by then. Makes me feel old as I am a year and a few months older than he is by my somewhat fuzzy memory

Why would you put money on Bulgaria, the BFA is in absolute shambles, no talent youngsters, absolute worst state football has been in since ive been alive.
You're right on cole I just never rated him that much myself, although I cant really think of better lbs. My personal fave is lizarazu he played ages ago though. Same with r carlos. Serginho was ages ago although hed be on par with cole. Fuck. Baines would have been the best lb in the premier league for ages too I dont really rate him either so I guess youre right.

Maldini at left back in the Immortals was the best I have ever seen.

That fucking defence.

Maldini - Baresi - Costacurta - Tassotti.

Has there ever been anything better?

Hell of a team that. Got away with a terrible keeper in Rossi as he had bugger all to do.

Our England 2005/6 back four of Cashley - Terry - Rio - GNev was pretty damn special. All nailed on starters for teams that kept making the last 8/4 of the CL. With Sol and Carragher to add to that, still in the same bracket.

Milan of the late eighties were just glorious. Such a fabulous team.

I would put them on a par with the early seventies Ajax and Bayern Munich teams plus Brazil 1982 and really not far off Brazil 1970(although those teams obviously had a different style of play). They just seemed unbeatable.

Great strike from him in the opening game there too, cutting back onto his right.

Had just passed my driving test and got home just in time for kick off.

Yep, Costa Rica. Lukas Podolski made a career off that tournament.

Poor game in Dublin, Switzerland look a bit lost without Shaqiri and Ireland are basically 2006 Wolves. Guts, heart, bravery but no ability.

It's amazing how you remember world cups. Finished my last A level and we all dived in the pub for Cameroon v Argentina 1990 thinking it would be a slaughter. It turned into an excellent game of rugby.

1990 - my first. Saw most games, watched the Goals video thousands of times
1994- missed huge chunks of it, I was only 13, staying up until 1am wasn't on
1998 - class, back from school just in time for the first game, on for the evenings
2002 - back from Germany, essentially had fuck all to do for a month so just watched it despite the weird times
2006 - decent, finish work at 5, saw most of the games
2010 - worst World Cup ever, even if I saw the games I wish I hadn't. Urgh
2014 - all evenings. Cool
2018 - work from home. No issue

1994 was garbage. At least most of it. The final was horrendous. I was drinking very lovely chilled French lager in a super place in deepest darkest West Brittany on hols and it turned into quite the monster session with all of us in the bar but the game was abominable.

1994 was decent I think? Good Bulgaria and Romania teams. Sweden were decent too. Italy depended on Baggio but there are a lot of teams who have coasted through on one player. Brazil had Romario who was a toe poking joy in himself.

Wouldn't say it was vintage but 2010 is your garbage World Cup. I'd happily pop that tournament in the bin and pretend it never happened.

94 was a great wc apart from the final.

Serginho-maldini-nesta-cafu my fave backline all time, im a huge nesta fan and I dont like staam at all. Maldini greatest defender and cafu greatest rb all time imo. Serginho was hugely underrated too, im pretty sure he had a season with almost 20 goals
