The Wolves 3 Wet Shambles 0 Verdict Thread

That was a great match to watch. I was anticipating a slightly nervy affair, with the result being 1 goal separating 2 fairly evenly balanced teams.

And that's how it started, though we were on the front foot trying to take the game to wet spam. Penalty shout at the other end within the first 5 mins (people from that end have suggested it was a penalty), and a goal chalked off rightly for offside. A long ball goes out towards Doherty, and he doesn't control it. And after that moment we went up a gear.

I struggle to give anyone in the team a mark of less than 7.5 really. Patricio's kicking was much improved - I think having 2 options of Dendoncker and Doherty helps, and significantly we won most of his kicks.

Coady carried a knock through the game, he was down for a while in the 1st half. Johnny mentioned afterwards that he was unsure about Coady tonight, but putting Kilman on after 15 mins would have been a huge risk.

The real Johnny (Otto) was brilliant. Could have scored twice at least, got into some great attacking positions, and was brilliant defensively. £18million is a bargain. It is also a sign of how far we've come again, as when we announced the loan deal, practically no-one thought we had a hope in hell of making it permanent.

The holy trinity in midfield were all superb, and there were various stages of great interplay between them. Dendonker really adds something, and Moutinho is an absolute god. And what an athelete. One other addition, Neves won a ridiculous amount of headers in the middle of the park. Is there anything he can't do? Neves is looking more and more like the player we know, ever since the liverpool game imo.

Jiminez, well 38 million euros is an essential purchase. In reality, signing Jiminez and Jonny on permanents this window would be a successful window imo. The man is class, and gets better each game. He is in his prime.

Fabianski was superb for them. Saved from Saiss, Jonny, Jota, all superb saves/chances for us. The Jota penalty in the 2nd have was so stonewall - there was absolutely no attempt by either west ham player to reach the ball, thus, I feel it should have been a red also. I will also accept the word of esteemed forumites who saw the appeals at the other end who were convinced we should have had a 1st half pen (possibly 2?) Had Fabianski not had such a good game, it really could have been 7 or 8. Genuinely.

Also, in the last 10 mins we were genuinely taking the piss, knocking the ball around at will, no west ham player could get near it.
Funniest moment of the night - gibbs-white going up for a header with andy carroll.

All in all, superb. Have to be going to everton with an element of confidence. Indeed, we're arguably favourites for every game up to and including 2 March.

What a time to be alive!

Just looked at the form table over the last 10 games, we are 5th and only -1 goal difference behind Chelsea in 4th. Not bad for over quarter of a season for a newly promoted side.

Aside from that month where we played watford/cardiff/huddersfield, I feel our form generally has been excellent. Importantly, we're getting better with each game.

One criticism of Nuno last season was he appeared inflexible. I know I worried he had no real plan B. The changes in style and formation he has implemented this season show me he is learning, and is flexible. I :tiphat: to him.

Yeah, I was concerned that after those games that he wasn't prepared to change and was questioning whether he would last if he'd carried on with the formation. He certainly has changed and think the new formation, the inclusion of Dendoncker and the return of Jota is far better than the old.

In some ways we have styles and options now. We have the hugely effective 3-4-3 that worked so well last year. We have what is effectively a 3-5-2 now.
Only concern for me, is we have a superb first 11 for those formations, but we are limited on the options for the back line and front 2.

This got a mention in the Guardian's write up. Pellegrini was moaning about only having "15 players fit". The Guardian wrote:

Wolves’s wafer-thin squad – they have used just 18 in the Premier League this season, the lowest in the division – continue to deliver, however.

I love what Dendoncker brings to the side. Him, Neves and Moutinho is the best midfield I've ever seen here by a mile.
.

Better than the dynamic duo of Karl Henry and Dave Edwards? Surely you jest...

We've had 2 pretty excellent years regarding injuries. Our sports science folk are doing amazing work on injury prevention, as well as rehab.
However to expect that to continue indefinitely is risky, borderline negligent.
The difficulty will be signing a striker at least as good as Raul/Jota but willing to be patient enough to wait for their opportunity.

The only issue with the narrower forward line is that we've got £60m worth of wingers on the bench. I think we'll see at least two of them move on in the summer

£60m?

I think you mean £38m.

It's a close thing, but seeing as they get through more successful passes per game than those 2 did per season, I'll stick with Neves/Moutinho/Donk ;)

Karl Henry Dave Edwards also sounds like the 4 man midfield of a pub team, scribbled on the back of a fag packet in the pub the night before.

Well, it won't if we are prepared to spend £40 to £50 million on whoever it might be.

There's a good piece here which discusses why the periodisation of training works well for injuries. Nuno is one of the followers of this style and you can see why it's effective.

Thought I would pop on SSN this morning. See what they have to day about the win

Well, 2 hours in and our game finally comes up and they show the goals and then talk about West Ham being shit and Arnie's injury. That is that

Cheers fuckers.

BBC News this morning never mentioned us at all.

Whether it's by luck or design, the inclusion of Dendoncker as a box to box mid is inspired. His presence in the middle stops the opposition overwhelming the middle 2, his lung bursting runs forward are supporting the front 2. I don't think it will be long before he gets his first goal. When we attack, he's the first in the box after the strikers. He takes up great positions and always looks like he is there to score. He was first to react for his disallowed goal last night and considering how long it's taken him to break through into the sided, the confidence he showed in trying his audacious flick last night was remarkable. On the extended highlights, he is always around the action. His versatility also gives us a myriad of options if we need to change our shape. We have definitely struck Gold

seems to be across most media. Even sites who have dedicated sections for each EPL team will run stories about other teams on ours above our own.
