The Video Games Thread II - The Resurrection

I've just spent the last two hours playing the Pro-Evo demo.

I've had more fun and enjoyment and 'get in' moments in the last two hours than I have had in the last year with FIFA.

Sorry FIFA - don't care if you've got the commentary and the names - football video games are about fun and Pro Evo wins hands down.

I tried the PES demo. It's shit. FIFA pisses all over it.

I would have enjoyed it if it'd been more like the old PES, but it's really not. It plays like Steve Corica with gout. I'm not sure how you can say it's fun, and FIFA isn't. I find the complete opposite these days and I hate to say that as a massive fan of PES when it was good.

I'm appalled at how low one of my favourite franchises has fallen.

??

It lets you download it before it comes out. It's not you buying the game. The download expires when the game is officially released. I bought the pre-release via Amazon for $40.

Season mode is so much better, but a lot harder. I started a new career and sold Fletcher/Kightly, then bought Chicharito. Well 3 days before the transfer window Dickhead Doyle comes up saying he wants to leave and the board forces me to sell. So now I have freaking ebanks blake as my second striker since I was broke and couldn't get any deals worked out in time.

Thanks for clearing that one up. It becomes clear now..

I tried the PES demo. It's top. FIFA pisses all over itself.

I would have enjoyed it if it'd been more like the old FIFA, but it's really not. It's so much better. It plays like Steve Bull. I'm not sure how you can't say PES is fun, and FIFA isn't. I find the FIFA so boring. I hate to say that as a massive fan of PES I'm so pleased it's still so good.

I'm appalled how I've got this so wrong.

Sorted.

Come on man - PES has totally lost the plot. You're in denial!!

I played both demos today.

I've hated the last few PES games. Utter turd. This demo was much improved though and was actually fun to play. Good close control and passing, fluid player movement and free-kicks are now possible to score from it seems. Good fun all round.

FIFA was the same old garbage. Sluggish gameplay, shit controls with deranged button options, stupid AI passing decisions, crap delayed shooting and a quite horrible, horrible menu system that has you pressing unintuitive buttons to confirm or change things. Utter shit and just drains all the fun out of a game of football.

Was at the Eurogamer expo yesterday. Got to see many games and came to the conclusion of I will be poor by christmas. Main game I wanted to play was Battlefield 3. Qued for almost an hour to get 10mins but boy what a 10mins. Played the PC version (console looked just as good in terms of how it played) and was just super. Headphones weren't great sound wise but the guns sounded super. The map was a variation of the Metro map (I think) that was used in the early trailers and Alpha but without Vehicles. Didn't play MW3 but from what I did see (watched a good half hour while was having food overlooking the MW3 area) the main difference between the 2 gameplay wise was recoil. MW3 had next to no recoil on the weapons where as BF3 the recoil was ridiculous. Good luck keeping your aim on your bloke while firing full auto. Really can't wait for this to come out now. For anyone who missed the news last week the open beta for BF3 will start 29th Sept or 27th if you have the early access code from Medal of Honor.

Other notes Skyrim is fantastic and looks beautiful. Was running on 360 and just looks amazing. Mass Effect 3 was running the part of the demo shown at E3. Looks really nice and just can't wait till release now. Uncharted 3 was just running multiplayer from what I saw so wasn't really interested. Would have loved to see some SP but didn't see any. Arkham City didn't play as it just looked pretty much same as Asylum so know what to expect although they seemed to be playing as Catwoman. Still I loved Asylum so will be getting this anyway. Forza 4 looks very nice graphically but is just really an upgrade to 3 if not much else. Saints Row 3 is just simply insane.

Main stand of the show though seemed to be the Onlive one. 2 hour que!. Lucky first 1000 or so people got a free micro console and everyone after got a voucher to buy it for £1 (excluding postage). Not bad really seeing as it's £70. By time I'd gotten the voucher I was pretty much too drained to do much else there. Eventually departed to a tube full of Chelsea and Swansea fans. However you'd have thought Chelsea had lost!. Boring bunch. Fair play to the Swansea fans who were still singing away albeit Chelsea's a shithole I want to go home, which I had no disagreement with.

Fifa 12 ordered along with a pair of Turtle's Head headphones...

PES plays like Robert Taylor after a 4 course meal... If your used to the FIFA 360 player motion then forget PES.

New F1 game is excellent.

Still not keen on FIFA, not just because of the new style of defending.

I had to turn down the difficulty on FIFA from pro to semi-pro. Unfortunately the gap is too wide. I'm either consistently losing/drawing in pro or winning 6-0 in semi-pro. In FIFA 11 I played on World Class.

All players seem to be the same speed in pro where semi-pro I can just run past everyone. I think I need to make better use of the motion stick and memorize a few good juke moves, then bump the difficulty back up.

Same, Drawing or losing by the odd goal on professional, winning too easy on semi-pro. I think Professional might be a bit better in the full game because the halves will be longer so you'll have more time to score.

I put halves down to 4 minutes in the career mode so I can't comment there, but I always did seem to get a really good throughball in right as the middle whistle blew. :surrender:

All I know is that even Chicharito with 94 accel and 91 sprint speed isn't outrunning any defenses in Pro. And Jarvis/Hammill are suffering from the same.

Been on the PES demo an awful lot, trying to like this. I can't - it plays pretty well, I can't deny that. But it's such a mess.

I know and agree that gameplay is the most important thing, but this is a screenshot from PES2012.

Cutting edge presentation.

WHY can't they just update this game to the 21st century?! Licensing issues aside (the edit mode sees to that to an extent), they really should be able to make it smarter that this. It's like the Game Gear has returned. If you put this next to PES 5 (the last version to appear before the 360 was released) it really isn't much of an advancement. That was about 5/6 years ago.

Gameplay wise - I think FIFA is just - only just - ahead. Probably because I'm more used to the FIFA engine these days, but I can see why people still play PES. But it's just such an awful mess of a game that I'd never think about buying it.

It looks like it's coming out on XBLA.

Shoddy from Konami.

The menu's on PES have always been dogshit, as i've said before its like watching great football through a shit old analogue TV with ITV coverage, FIFA is Sky Sports coverage in full HD but the football just doesn't do it for me.

Can I just say that I just can't wait for Skyrim. I know I will be playing it for the next 3 years - just like Oblivion.

Is it right for somebody who is 54 being really excited about a video game?!

.

I must admit I don't care about that sort of stuff - I just want to play footy and PES floats my boat more than FIFA.
It just seems.........more real....more exciting.....more like being involved. FIFA seems as if I am controlling the game from the stands.

But the difference in gameplay really isn't that different. They both play well. I'd say that the gameplay on PES hasn't changed all that much, but FIFA has improved immeasurably in recent years. I couldn't stand FIFA games until a few years ago, but it has caught up.

Still don't think I'll buy FIFA on Friday though - I just can't afford to fork out £40 on a new game, I still have Black Ops that I'm on all the time. I'd like it, but it's not an essential purchase.

The last two FIFA games have been a big improvement but they're still too slow for my liking, i find it difficult to play a pass beyond the closest team mate without it being cut out because the ball moves so slowly and the players all seem very sluggish on the turn. PES just seems more fluid to me, strange considering its the one without the 360 degree movement.

That's purely because you haven't played it enough. It's easy to pass it quickly in FIFA, and using the shoulder buttons means you can hit a lovely, long, raking pass across the pitch to set up attacks etc. The same with close control - once you've grasped the extra buttons, the control is spot on.

Far more variety in FIFA gameplay.
