The TWF Horse Racing Thread

I know nothing about horses, but for the second year running I have backed the winner.

Wife puts 2 bets on via Paddypower. Each way so down to 5th place finish...she backs the winner and 5th place!!

I will renew my gambling addiction at next years Grand National. I only bet once a year.

All horses home safe and sound from the best race in the world

I'm surprised Rule the World wasn't a lot shorter as it seems every woman in the World was on Rule the World.

That's the main thing.

Seems to me without doing any scientific analysis, that the slower the race due to the conditions (despite meaning less finishers) the less likelyhood of horses getting injured.

As for the race itself if I had a shortlist of 20 Rule the world wouldnt have been on it, but thats the beauty of the National

Away from Aintree a strange one,
I use a system (fairly crude on handicap NH races horses running in the last week), had a quick look last night only 1 horse came up, Bertielicious at Sedgefield went on and it was 100-1! thought fuck it will stick a couple of quid (e/w) on it anyway, didnt see race but it came in second at 9-1 no non-runners in the race either.

We could still have the race of the season ahead of us on April 27th. Cue Card, Don Cossack and Vautour going head to head with a few others thrown into the mix as well. My advice is that wherever you are take some time out to watch it.

Would be a fantastic race, hopefully it happens and they all turn up fit and well. I will back Don Cossack if he turns up but i couldn't be sure he would beat either Cue Card or Vautour.

Let's hope it happens. Can't wait.

Think Vautour would win it at Punchestown.

I have to agree, I think Vautour is an absolute monster. Watch the Aintree race back and carefully watch what he does with no guidance. The big decision is do we back him now @ 8's for next years Gold Cup? Because if he romps home he will be 5/2.

I think he'll win the next Gold Cup.

I'd also be tempted to put a little anti post on Thistlecrack before he goes over the fences.

Next years GC could be even better than this years, Don Cossack will turn up and Cue Card is still getting better despite being a 11 yo next year, Djakadam will only be 8 and then you have Coneygree, Vautour and Thistlecrack who may go over fences. If the latter jumps fences i think he's the monster. Douvan is entered too and while i don't think he will go there imagine if he did.

If I'm going to take 8's on anything for next year it is Alpha des Obeaux in the RSA.

If they can get Barters Hill to jump a fence he could be a massive price at 20s for the RSA, he wasn't right in the Albert Bartlett and still ran an absolute stormer. Alpha Des Obeaux looks a certainty to go close though if he keeps sound.

Pauling said he'll be dropping in trip at the start of the season. He's a horse I've really taken to so I'd love it if he turned into a serious chaser.

Tomorrow's card at Newbury although on heavy ground is exactly the reason why i like the flat as much as the jumps for entirely different reasons. The jumps you see horses run reason in season out and see how they progress but lot of the time on the flat you get to see how well good horses do as sires or as broodmares and you get to see brothers and sisters to very good horses running every season.

For example running tomorrow there is a full sister to Taghrooda (oaks winner) and the first foal of Midday who is 10/1 for the Derby. The last race is the best one for me as 6 of the 7 are related to horses who have RPR's of over 100 and the other one is related to a winner rated over 90. Although it's on heavy ground i think it's definitely a day to watch for horses who could be worth following.

I doubt anyone is really that interested in any of this but there if you are.
