The Things You Are HAPPY About Thread.

Fun fact: NYC didn't let them shut down the streets for that. They got the whole thing in one take, and all of the traffic you see in the film is real.
Wow! even where he crashes through the fruit market?
and what about the woman pushing the pram that looms up at 60mph??
And all the cars he smashes into....

I'm almost certain it's been confirmed that the woman was a bystander.

The fruit market bit is staged IIRC. The cars he smashed I believe they tracked the owners of and paid some amount of restitution.

Don't think I've seen that one
Ah you've got to see it. The train is on an elevated track (but you knew that by the 'E' train) and he's ripping it up underneath it, most of it is road but a fair bit is pedestrianised with people and mothers and kids and this drugs guy is on the train and he's trying to get to the next station before it so he can get him, hence the 60mph.... For its time with no computer graphics its worse driving than me, and really gripping, You wont breathe for about 3 or 4 minutes. You can probably find it on YouTube...

It really is one of the most exceptionally intense sequences in any film I've ever seen.

I shall have a look, sounds good

Wouldn't go back to driving a manual myself now. I know some feel that is proper driving but I only drive to get places and the simpler that is the better, not after any pleasure in driving to Leeds or wherever other than I am there in 1 piece. Also gives me more time and energy to shout at other drivers for doing exactly what I do...
Yeah I passed the test today in an automatic. I think with the progress made with EVs, all cars will be automatic in a few years.
Just so much easier and allows better focus on other things happening around you. Also safer too, there was a family almost wiped out here a few yrs back as the driver stalled the manual car as he was pulling out from a side road onto a main road and a lorry smashed into them. With an automatic you dont have that issue, you just put the foot down and go.

Lupo, I've just watched it! 'Car chase from The French Connection'. Bear in mind it was released on Boxing day 1971.
So cut it some slack...

Thanks for the info Alan, Can you imagine what the insurance would have been for doing it in a live sequence?? Jesuuuus!

I just hope it won’t turn out to be an apocryphal story that just happened to gain traction!

In a few years you wont be driving. They'll all be robotically moved. GPS and all that. No drivers at all!

Thanks mate, the year I was born, same as 2 of my favourite films Dirty Harry and Duel

No clue at all.
The car? The Director? The year?
The car? Pontiac Le Mans in TFC, Ford Mustang GT in Bullitt

The Director? William Friedkin for TFC, Peter Yates for Bullitt

The year? TFC 1971, Bullitt 1968

The answer;

Bill Hickman, the stunt driver.

Manuals are completely unnecessary nowadays. Auto boxes are so good and so smooth they're just redundant unless you want to race it on track.

Or you are Under 21 and actually want to drive a car
