The Things You Are HAPPY About Thread.

Passed my driving test today. First go.
Thought I made a balls of it halfway through as there was loads of hazards that I felt I hadnt given 1.5m clearance to, pedestrians walking out, cyclists, lorries reversing etc. Thought I'd blown it but passed with 6/8 errors
Congratulations. I am definitely jealous and wondering if, now that I’m 43, I’ve reached the point where I’m just too old to learn :(

Nah, our neighbour is older and just passed her test.

If you have a sort of craving, if you feel you're really missing out by not being independently mobile, then learn to drive. It'll be harder if you've driven for years but never passed your test, that'll be quite hard.
Sooooo many bad habits to forget so you can 'do it right'.
@Alan, what's a driving test like in America?

Last time I took one they just gave me the answers.

As far as I know, not a single state requires an actual driving exam beyond the first one (IE, nobody has sat and observed me actually driving a car since I was 17).

Wow!
No wonder they get fleeced at car hire outlets in Europe!
It was fairly tough when I passed my test nearly 40 years ago, but now they have theory and a tough test in the UK.

I took my test over 50 years ago, it wasn't tough...

We barely license our gun owners so it's only natural that driver's licenses are a total joke.

"Ok, were going down a fairly steep hill here Mr Jackson, I want you to stop just past this road on the left. Then reverse (Uphill you bastard) around into the road staying no more than 1 yard from the kerb and bring the car to a stop, a safe distance from the junction...."
That sort of shit?

Fucking hell Alan, so when I'm watching telly and cars are streaming over the Golden Gate Bridge and just shots of driving around cities, that everyone in the shot are just not crashing by instinct?
No one has had any proper lessons??
Astounding!

I'm sure some states take it more seriously than others, but by and large getting your license here is a formality. You want one, you'll almost certainly get one. Once you've got it, renewing is even more of a formality.

It's not a great setup.

So, you just apply and get most of your points for putting your name and date correctly..?
There's no observation or assessment of your skills , at junctions, overtaking, in thick traffic or anything like that?
Wow!
I say this but some years ago Ireland had a proper system in place but nowhere near enough instructors, the waiting lists were years long, so the government stepped in, assessed the situation, employed hundreds of training driving instructors and everyone who was on the list, got a 'Pass!' Thousands of people of a certain age driving around never had a fucking lesson or a test!

Not uphill... Yeah you had to reverse into a junction... If you can't do that safely, you don't deserve your licence...

Blimey. I took a ton of lessons when I was younger and have failed 5 driving tests!

First lesson on my 17th birthday and passed 12 weeks later, 35 years ago this month
