I watched Saudi play Germany last week, ropey start but they picked up and could even have snatched an equaliser near the end. Russia on the other hand are shocking. So you never know today, although hosts do fairly often get some "generous" refereeing decisions.

Fact of the day: Oleg Salenko scored five for Russia vs Cameroon in the 1994 World Cup. Then never played a single international match again.

great stuff. I had no idea russia were so bad - they or USSR have had some great teams so really it shouldn't happen.

the belanov goal v Belgium (above) was a cracking game - finished 4-3 to Belgium. I was a bit disappointed as USSR had a pretty skilful side.

They are seriously bad. Run out of centre halves to the point they've had to drag Ignashevich out of international retirement and he'll probably start later. He's 39 next month.
