The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

Well, I think that's a bit uncalled for.
There are many who display a shocking attitude and shout fairly acidic abuse at any number of people on here, fairly frequently.
Those two guys are well able to write articulate and entertaining posts any time they like.
So what if they're running against the grain of an emotive string of opinion.
Are there some faint unwritten rules being broken here?
It's an opinion and this is a forum, wind it in a bit Tony.
I'll take direction from mods if required. You can jog on, particularly 2 days later

No certain posters were on here with a deliberate attempt of get a reaction. They did in subtle ways ie laughing emoji use, using lol after a penalty miss. Saying decision against certain players were good because they don’t like them.
Rule of thumb discuss on here as you would if the other members were in the same room as you. Not going to pretend I’m perfect because I’ve been a prick at times. Seriously would you laugh out loud if you were in a pub full of England fans after Kane’s miss? I doubt it.
Would you laugh in someone’s face after they’ve given you an opinion?

It's old, but still relevant:)

Another thing that Southgate has that I don't think we'd be able to find in a potential successor is his decency. His interviews are always spot on - articulate, respectful and.... well.... decent.

He's a very good role model, a great ambassador and clearly has a huge impact in the positivity within the camps during tournaments. He's very likeable.

I suppose that's something else you can liken to Wolves - replacing Nuno with Lage saw an immediate downturn in the head coach's connection with supporters. Nuno always came across well, Lage really didn't.

There's rumours Pochettino and Tuchel would be interested in the England job (how true this Is, who knows). Objectively, they are 2/3 levels above the current incumbent so you'd have to be stupid not to take them. Regardless of the record Southgate has which I think is an underachievement considering squad talent and opponents faced.

I don't think there's any way 2018 was an underachievement. No-one fancied us at all (fair enough as we'd done nothing at a tournament since Sven) and the squad contained all of Young, Delph, Cahill, Welbeck, Jones, Rose, Lingard and Alli. It's only four and a half years ago and the transfer value of that lot now - over a third of the squad - is about £0. Welbz is the only one who'd fetch a fee and not that much as he's old and always gets injured.

Tuchel mentioned the England job in an interview not long after his sacking.

I think he just wants to keep living in London at the moment but because of Brexit he is due to be sent "home" this month

The ref from our game has been dealt with by FIFA.....by asking him to stay in Qatar and being in the running to ref the World Cup Final

Anthony Taylor is staying but Michael Oliver is on his way home

France must be worried about not winning.

Think you’re underestimating how hard it is to win a major tournament. Plus underestimating the standard of opponents that have beaten us.
Croatia batted hardened with some creative players, Italy regardless of what happened afterwards still had some very good players.
France packed with quality.
None of the defeats can you say he failed miserably yes maybe could’ve got a few things better but hindsight is great at times.
If England had 3 trophies on offer each year and he still not won anything you’d say yep not good enough. When it’s 1 every 2 years, even the very best don’t get to win Brazil 82 spring to mind

The skills it takes to be a club manager != the skills it takes to be an international manager

There's a lot of overlap, obviously, but the demands are different, as far as I can tell.

I'd say it's about par, not because the squad was full of world class talent, but that run to the semis is one of the easiest I can remember. Wins against Tunisia, Panama, Colombia and Sweden is hardly a murderers row.

Personally didn't even fancy us to beat Colombia to be honest, we were playing shit like Ashley Young and Jesse Lingard, Dele Alli, basically just relied on set pieces. Young team, (in)experienced players in key positions (Pickford, Maguire) and Stones lot worse than he was. I find when people criticise our 2018 run as an underpeformance they also write Croatia off massively. Sweden no pushovers either, solid team, probably should have beaten Germany, knocked out Italy in the play-offs - not to mention our past record against them.

We were barely scoring just before the World Cup too, played like shit throughout all of the qualifiers. It was the tournament itself which broke us out of the malaise and got me feeling engaged with England for once so I think it was a big success.

Would be a good point but I reckon VAR would have picked up on the fact we killed Mbappe and co with fucking long bows.

An England exit brings out the ultimate weapons from around the British isles England fans want Kane hung drawn and quartered and Southgate sacked and exiled to South Georgia.
Then you’ve got the perfect people in the ABE club. Classic from a former colleague “why do England fans think they’ve got a chance?”
Erm we got to a semi final and final in our last two tournaments maybe gives you some hope.
Or another is “take a leaf out of Scotlands book and accept that you’re shit”
