The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

Hang on. Only 8 teams got into Euro 92?

How does a nation "stumble" into a competition that such a small portion of sides actually qualify for?

All ifs and buts.

PoInt is they were a small footballing country, turned up unprepared and unfancied, played attacking football and won it.

6 goals in 5 games only actually won 2 matches, yes great achievement but no means was it free flowing throughout.
They had some decent players to Laudrup brothers, Schmichael, Jensen, Vilfort etc

They didn’t qualify for it!

Yep it lasted 2 weeks was more of a get together than a major tournament feel to it.
Should’ve been Yugoslavia but the war meant they couldn’t participate I think Denmark came behind them in qualifying.

I didn’t say they were free flowing throughout - I said they grew into it playing some great attacking football and by the time they got to the final we’re able to play Germany off the park.

Anyway, we are going round in circles, points been made on both sides.

You know, it's easy for me to think that the power balance in global football can't change, but then I have to grapple with the likes of Yugoslavia who don't even exist anymore!

At time only 34 associations existed in UEFA its over 50 now former Yugoslavia churned up Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Slovenia, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo.
Former Soviet Union added 11 extra nations.
Not forgetting Czechoslovakia until 92

Plus none of the likes of Andorra and Gibraltar

The old European cup you only had to win 5 ties.

You had to win your domestic league first to qualify though to be fair.

I guess that’s why you’d get the likes of Malmo in the final but I kind of liked the uncomplicated nature of that tournament.

Still not truly warmed to the Champions League hybrid league/knockout version but unless you’re going full European league there’s always a compromise somewhere

Yep unseeded as well. Villa beat sides from Iceland, East Germany, USSR and Belgium when they won it before beating Bayern. Going behind the iron curtain obviously had its challenges but not the hardest path to a European Cup Final

Whereas Liverpool and Forest were drawn against each other in the first round

Brazil dancing all over the place last night , even the Manager got involved after one of the goals . Then the go and substitute the goalie - something you never see happening .
Didi Hamann didn't like it one single bit and made that very clear on RTE last night .

I don't know . Brazil have always done that kind of thing after goals , maybe not as much as last night , but they're famous for dancing and always have been .
It was way too easy for them last night and South Korea opened up like the parting of the Red Sea .

Shaping up nicely now . They're could well be surprises today . Morocco and the Swiss will fancy their chances .

I have always thought of him as the placid type. Really difficult to make angry.

Choreographed dancing is a pile of shite, but it’s been around for ages. If you feel disrespected as opposition, kick Neymar and Richarlison into row Z. I’m sure the red card will be worth it as they celebrate winding you up exactly as planned.

After every goal when they were annihilating their opponents was massively OTT though. Then you've got the 2nd goal - a ridiculous overreaction by Richarselison from the slightest touch, a stupid stuttering run up from Neymar and then more dancing.

Maybe I'm just old and grumpy but I don't find them likeable at all, and their antics after EVERY goal was disrespectful, bollocks to the 'culture' argument, that's just taking the piss and milking it.

Some sumptuous football, no denying that - the last 2 goals in particular were great to watch but I would hope that when they face sterner tests, they get some of their own medicine.

I felt like this about them in 2014 but that seems to have dissipated for me now. Don’t know why. Maybe their goals are so glorious it’s a change from the mechanised high-grade fare of modern football that’s making me nostalgic. If they went on to win and played some sensational stuff I wouldn’t mind at all. Certainly did not feel that way about them this Millenium to dat.

If I was going out of a World Cup at 4-0 down I'd have taken Richarlison out at the knees.

He's an arsehole.
