The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

“When I look at it from a 45 degree angle it looks out!”

Honestly, the amount of people who don’t understand this. It’s the same with offside “they haven’t got a camera inline so how can they say it’s offside”.

It’s pretty clear like Walton said. It’s most likely still in play (I’d say definitely), and there’s no evidence to say it isn’t…

Eni Aluko with some masterful insight “ it looked out in real time” well great that’s that settled

FIFA need to come out and show the pictures they used to make the decision to shut up all the clowns that are still claiming controversy and disgrace, Graeme Souness and Alan Brazil in particular.

And has been pointed out, the crossbar and goal line are not aligned so even that camera is not directly overhead. Meaning the ball is slightly MORE in play than that shot reveals.

Can't imagine FIFA give a fuck about the opinions of Souness and/or Brazil, nor should they.

Exactly it’s a time when the officials have used VAR exactly right and what you’d want to get right. The amount of times I’ve heard a “ controversial goal” this morning. What’s controversial a player crosses it for his teammate to score.

Yep had it been England going out they’d have no problem.
It’s deflecting away from how well Japan played second half and how in reality Germany didn’t deserve to go through.

I do agree with Neville though that they should release things quicker. FIFA VAR seems to want to keep hold of the info it has and not release it. Releasing images to the team covering the game quickly should surely be a standard thing. As it is in the PL and CL games.

Their rant after the game was beyond OTT though. Probably covering themselves from having to explain how the team they claimed to be the best in the Tournament at HT had just lost to Japan (and its not much a shock considering they also beat Germany after going behind as well)

Thing is, if they'd have got that view out to broadcast earlier it would've stopped all the noise. There was like 40 minutes of people trusting their eyes at that 45 degree angle photo, and so people had clearly just convinced themselves it was out. It shouldn't have taken that long, and I do agree that the viewers (nevermind the teams involved etc) have a right to see the images used in making such a key decision.

Don't get me wrong, it's in play, and anybody dying on the hill saying it's out is a prick - but it was handled badly by FIFA's production people

It's certainly a weird thing for FIFA to do. The images are available almost instantly from Hawkeye/ Adidas.

I don't understand why they delayed it.

Totally agree with Kenny and Del. It was the right decision and they obviously had sufficient evidence to let the goal stand.

Just thought it was a shame that the main discussion point was this (correct) decision, and not Japan's fantastic 2nd half performance.

Maybe they just wanted to troll Souness?
