The Official Euro 2016 Megathread

I think we can all agree that whether the penalty call was correct or not it has had a massive effect on the outcome of this match. Germany were in complete control until that moment, yuo would fancy the French against Portugal but they seem to have the luck on their side ever since they scraped through the group stage.

Agreed. The Ronaldo factor

What do we think to the tournament as a whole then?

I've enjoyed it. The new structure is fucking stupid and led to a few poor games in the group stages but overall it's been one of the better tournaments I can remember.

5/10 from me. Well behind all of 1994, 1998, 2000, 2008, 2012 and 2014 which were all very good tournaments. It's reminded me of the general torpor of Euro 96 (if you ignore the feelgood factor of England doing well) with the added stupidity of a terrible structure.

Not a disaster like 2010 was (doubt I will ever see a tournament that bad as long as I live) as there have been some interesting stories and a few very good games, but it's not one I'll look back on with much fondness.

The Wales journey was worth watching - not sure much else was

A final that doesn't inspire - France or Portugal, really don't care that much

I thought the new structure worked better than expected. Gave the chance for more Cinderellas (even if most, like Albania, didn't snatch the chance) which is always exciting, and meant that nearly everyone had something to play for in round 3, rather than there being a bunch of lame ducks flying around.

But as someone who sees sport as competition first and entertainment second, I accept I'm looking at it from a much different angle than most here.

I think that is fair.

My favourite game was Hungary v Portugal. Thought that was bonkers.

Iceland v. Austria for me. Best last-minute goal since Landon Donovan against Algeria (international games only). Goosebumps.

Italy vs Spain
Wales vs Belgium
Belgium vs Italy
France vs Germany
Hungary vs Portugal
Croatia vs Spain

Fair to say those were all very good games.

I liked the new format personally. It meant no dead rubber games in the groups and it was up in the air as to who was playing who in the next round.

I think it's been pretty poor. Iceland and Wales were fantastic but I can't say a tournament that sees soulless dullards like Portugal - who didn't even win a group game - fluke their way to the final is a success.

The format hasn't worked and there just haven't been enough good games.

I agree with Deutsch overall, not the worst ever. South Africa really was horrendous. But it's not been particularly memorable.

Overall I think it has been a very average tournament with no outstanding team. I think I probably enjoyed the Wales v Belgium game the most, but many games were very dull.

Would agree with that Frank. There were some great highlights, such as us beating Italy and the Wales and Iceland journeys, but there has been a lack of quality in most games. Although the French, and Griezmann in particular have looked quality.

I enjoyed the tournament overall, wouldn't be sad to see the 24 team format again.

I don't think it's been that bad either, you always get your fair share of shit games but i think there have been a fair few decent games to make up for those that stunk the place out. Everyone knew the rules before the tournament and since coming 3rd Portugal have had to beat Croatia, Poland and Wales, so they deserve to be where they are even if they are shit to watch.

I would rather it was 16 or 32 teams. 24 is a bit of a halfway house that satisfies no-one.

8 groups of 4 with the top 2 in each qualifying would work.

Would make qualifying pointless. Everyone would get in bar your joke shops like Andorra etc.
