The NFL Thread

The Raiders are a massive franchise, and Oakland to Vegas actually isn't insurmountable as a journey in the country where driving 8 hours for a burrito is not unheard of*

*to paraphrase Bill Bryson

The weird thing is that their catchment area in Oakland is actually pretty small in terms of local bums on seats because of the 49ers. Vegas won't make that much difference and it does negate the Rams coming back to LA I guess.

From my understanding no one in Oakland follows the 49ers. San Francisco has a reputation of thinking it's better than Oakland and that they resent SF because of this, it sounds very uk footy tribal to me. Loads of Oakland people were very vocal about ditching the A's when it was being mooted they were considering an offer of playing in or near San Fran.

Not sure where you'd check it now Paddy but I remember a few years back hearing (potentially from Mike Carlson so either on Ch5/Ch4 or his pod) that the Raiders sold the most Jerseys in American outside their territory. Also sold the most caps but apparently that is due to street culture fashion rather than those people being fans.

I see plenty of Raiders stuff about. The black/silver and the logo means it's always going to be fashionable.

I think you are both right. What I was saying is that their catchment area is Oakland and Oakland alone, for going to the games. The rest of the Bay Area is 49er territory.

Just been reading about Charlie Garner, another player with brain issues, this feels very real for me as I honestly don't equate him as having stopped that long ago, granted he must have retired around 2004-2006 short of time but that feels nothing.

It certainly puts it into perspective when you hear commentators moaning about defensive pass interference and bemoaning the lack of contact. I wonder if we will begin to see a decline in those even wanting to take up football in the first place. Not a chance I'd let my own kids play, even in this country, despite having played myself.

It's an interesting subject (head impact in sports) and there is a lot being done now in American Football with rules that are mitigating risk. The equipment is yet to catch up but it will soon. You are at far more risk boxing or playing rugby or ice hockey than American football though so if your scared about your kids doing a sport those 3 would be before AF.

Rugby will be getting it's bell rung very shortly regarding concussion and they're still in denial about CTE.

Looks like Tony Romo is retiring to go into the commentary box.

6pm kickoff for the first Twickenham game!! Bloody hell.

Got the code for the Twickenham games sent through yesterday. Going to make a weekend of the Vikings Browns game. Pleased it kicks off early, gives a chance to get in a decent pub afterwards with other fans to watch the games that kick off at 6 in the US.

I'm hoping to get Vikings tickets when they go on sale in a few days, haven't managed to get to a game yet

My brother has a spare ticket for the Vikings game Carrot, if you're just buying the one... We are "season ticket" holders but I can't make the game as it's my wifes 50th on Nov 1st so I'm taking her away on a mini break.

Someone should go to the Saints game in solidarity with me. :icon_wink:

Well I'm there and will definitely be wanting them to beat the fishes...Bloody hate The Dolphins! ;)

Unless we have a stellar draft I expect the Dolphins to be the better team this season. Not that either team looks like making much postseason noise.

I'm hoping to get more than one ticket to go with some mates but thanks for the offer!

Well if you need one more you know where to ask

If anyone else on here would like to go to just the one game just PM me and I'll get you the details. We had really good seats last year, side of the End Zone and within catching distance of the free teeshirts :icon_lol:

I had a great time with Gerry last year, cool day!

We may not be going to the Vikings game Carrotdude and could have three tickets up for grabs. All right near the half way line towards the front of the top tier.
